Join Bolton NHS Foundation Trust as our next Medical Director/Chief Medical Officer
Following the decision of our current post holder to retire at the start of February 2026, we are seeking an exceptional clinical leader to take on the pivotal role of Medical Director/Chief Medical Officer at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of healthcare in Bolton and beyond, driving excellence in clinical standards, governance, and strategic development across our integrated care services. You will be joining us at a pivotal moment for the Trust, and the wider NHS both regionally and nationally, as we address the need to transform into a more responsive, preventative, and patient-centred service in line with the 10 Year Health Plan for England. Ensuring our medical services are aligned to that plan, and providing best services to our patients within the NHS budgetary envelope, will form a critical part of your role.
Main duties of the jobWe are looking for a medically qualified consultant with significant experience in an acute or integrated NHS environment, who is registered with the GMC/ GDC and committed to continuous professional development. You will bring a proven track record of medical management at Board or Associate Director level, with demonstrable success in leading change, fostering high performance, and influencing strategic outcomes.
As a member of the Trust Board and Executive Team, you will provide visionary medical leadership, working collaboratively with divisional leaders, clinicians, and external partners to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care. You will play a central role in shaping our clinical strategy, leading on medical workforce development, and championing clinical governance and research.

Person Specification Qualifications- Medically qualified consultant with experience of working in an Acute/ Integrated Care NHS environment
- Registered with GMC/GDC
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Board level, or Associate Director experience in a medical management role
- Exemplary track record of successful and sustained medical management in an NHS Trust or equivalent
- Demonstrable experience in leading change management processes with successful outcomes whilst maintaining key performance indicators
- Demonstrable experience of creating a culture of high-performance
- Understanding and appreciation of current medical workforce issues
- A thorough understanding of current national political context and the implications for the Trust's services
- Understanding and application of principles and practice of Clinical Governance, Clinical Effectiveness and Clinical Audit
- Management of Research and Development programmes and initiatives
- Understanding of the role of management and clinical contribution to delivery of strategic vision
