Media Relations and Communications Advisor

The Media Relations and Communications Advisor will play a central role in shaping the Social Democrats' public communications and supporting elected representatives to communicate effectively across broadcast, print and digital media.

This is a unique role combining the responsibilities of a traditional press officer with strategic media advisory and training. The successful candidate will work closely with elected representatives to strengthen messaging, prepare for interviews and continually improve media performances and engagement.

Working closely with the Political and Communications Director, the role requires excellent political judgement, exceptional writing skills and a deep understanding of the Irish media landscape.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with national, regional, digital and specialist journalists.
• Prepare and distribute press releases, media statements and briefing notes.
• Pitch stories and opinion pieces to print, broadcast and online outlets.
• Coordinate media events and press conferences where required.
• Assist with speeches and opinion pieces.
• Prepare elected representatives for television, radio and podcast interviews.
• Conduct post-interview reviews and provide constructive feedback.
• Work closely with the Political and Communications Director to develop messaging around key campaigns and policy announcements.
• Ensure communications remain consistent with Party values and strategic priorities.
• Monitor media coverage, political developments and identify emerging issues.
• Identify opportunities to improve communication across all media platforms.
• Develop rapid-response and accurate communications during fast-moving political events.
• Assist in preparing campaign messaging, launch materials and media plans.
• Produce regular communications reports and recommendations.

Essential skills and experience

• At least five years' experience in communications, journalism, media relations or political communications.
• Exceptional writing and editing skills.
• Excellent understanding of the Irish political and media landscape.
• Strong political judgement and news sense.
• Good team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and rapidly respond to breaking news.
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Willingness to work some evenings and weekends.

Desirable skills and experience

• Experience working in politics, government or advocacy.
• Experience delivering media training or communications coaching.
• Experience writing press releases, briefing material and opinion pieces.
• Proficiency in the Irish language.
• Knowledge of digital communications and social media strategy.

Between €55,000 and €65,000, depending on experience.
