As part of the NHS Long Term Plan, we are embedding tobacco dependence treatment as a routine part of maternity care. By joining our team, you will play a vital role in helping patients to live smoke free, improving both their and their baby's health.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Tobacco Dependence Advisor to join our team, a role central to supporting patients in maternity services who smoke or vape by providing specialist behavioural support and treatment to help them manage nicotine withdrawal and work towards quitting.

You will:

  • Provide in reach specialist TDA with a systemic approach, working collaboratively with pregnant women/new parents, Maternity services, Family Nurse Partnership and the Perinatal Mental Health Service.
  • Offer flexible and convenient onsite clinics with comprehensive pre and post natal care that includes partners, to ensure a smoke free environment for newborns.
  • Integrate carbon monoxide/CO monitoring into the care pathway, with measurements taken at booking appointments and again at 36 weeks by THHFT maternity staff.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Provide smoking cessation interventions in line with evidence base and national standards.
  • Utilise motivational techniques, assess client's motivation to quit and maintain relationships to support cessation.
  • Develop an action plan with the client and discuss appropriate pharmacological support.
  • Attend bespoke training events for career and continuous professional development.
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of health related behaviour change evidence and NCSCT online training packages.
  • Comply with statutory and mandatory requirements in line with CNWL policy.
  • Review own practice for continual improvement within the team.
  • Ensure service delivery is maintained and suggest contingency plans for clinic delivery during absences.
  • Participate in regular reviews of service provision to meet client needs.
  • Work autonomously and use IT equipment for communication and reporting.
  • Use CO monitor to assess client levels and manage relevant equipment safely.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in line with Data Protection Act.
  • Collect and collate evidence of patient outcomes to evidence averted hospital presentations and admissions.
  • Produce performance quarterly reports, DoH digital returns and outcomes in line with NHS Russell Standard.
Person specification - essential and desirable
  • Good level of general education, including O Level or GCSE standard for English and Maths.
  • Completed the National Centre for Smoking Cessation Training (NCSCT) or level 2 Smoking Cessation training.
  • Experience in providing evidence based behavioural change interventions.
  • Knowledge of Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Motivational Enhancement Therapy.
  • Experience promoting health & wellbeing sessions.
  • Compassion for service users experiencing addiction and associated physical and psychological health problems.
  • Experience working with partner agencies and communicating clinical information for positive outcomes.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Additional modules of smoking cessation training via NCSCT for specialist priority groups.
  • Experience working in addictions services.
  • Good understanding of local and national policies relating to Stop Smoking Service provision.
