Maintenance Engineer

Hours: Monday to Friday, 12:00pm - 9:30pm (45 hours per week)
Location: Head Office, Ascot Drive, Derby, DE24 8GN (occasional travel to retail stores may be required)
Salary: £38,000 - £41,000 per year (depending on experience)
The position includes on-call duties with additional pay.

PurposeReporting to the Engineering Manager, as an Electrically Biased Maintenance Engineer, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving bakery equipment to ensure smooth production and retail operations. You will support both our main bakery site and retail stores, driving efficiency, safety, and continuous improvement.
ResponsibilitiesMaintenance & Repairs
- Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns across the bakery and retail stores, ensuring minimal disruption
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) tasks on schedule
- Inspect and maintain electrical and mechanical systems for safety and efficiency
- Take a proactive approach to reduce downtime and prevent recurring issues
- Maintain detailed maintenance logs and daily activity reports
Equipment & Projects
- Support the installation, testing, and commissioning of new equipment in the bakery and retail stores
- Assist the projects team with store refits, bakery upgrades, and new machinery initiatives
- Keep up to date with the latest technical developments
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on machinery and equipment when required
Operational Support
- Provide flexible, cross-functional support to both bakery and retail teams
- Cover planned and unplanned absences across multiple locations
- Help reduce reliance on external contractors by providing in-house engineering support
- Work collaboratively with all departments to resolve issues efficiently
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all work meets legislative, food safety, and engineering standards
- Follow Engineering Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times
- Champion Health & Safety and Food Safety best practices
- Conduct inspections to maintain compliance and a safe working environment
Communication & Coordination
- Keep the Engineering Manager informed of significant maintenance issues
- Build strong working relationships with suppliers, contractors, and service partners
- Collaborate across departments to promote teamwork and efficiency
- Strong time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines under pressure
- Excellent understanding of manufacturing processes and their impact on efficiency, quality, materials, and equipment
- Confident communicator, able to engage effectively at all levels
- Strong listening skills and openness to feedback and continuous improvement
- Logical, methodical approach to problem-solving
- Proven people management and team leadership skills
- Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office, Teams, and experience with ERP systems
- Strong analytical and numerical skills, with attention to detail
- Well organised, with the ability to prioritise and manage workload effectively
- Time-served, electrically biased multi skilled Maintenance Engineer, ideally with experience in the food or FMCG industry
- 17th or 18th Edition Electrical Qualification (desirable)
- Experience leading and/or commissioning engineering projects
- Knowledge of continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles, ideally within a food production environment
- Health & Safety qualification, such as IOSH Working Safely or equivalent (preferred)
- 4 weeks holiday per year, increasing incrementally to 5 weeks holiday (after 5 years continuous service) plus Bank Holidays
