An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, conscientious and dedicated maintenance electrician/electrical technician to join a team of engineering technicians, responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical plant and equipment at NHS/Health buildings maintained by CHoICE Facilities Services. The role will require the post holder to undertake the role of Competent Person (CP) as defined within Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 00 for multiple engineer services and support CHoICE to meet its statutory, mandatory and best practice commitments to its existing partners.
As part of the role, the post holder will be required to be flexible and have wide ranging knowledge of electrical systems to ensure maintenance, repair and installation activities can be completed efficiently and effectively whilst providing the best possible services. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to operate and maintain a large scale electrical system which includes: low voltage distribution systems, LV switchboards, general and emergency lighting systems, theatre operating lights, nurse call systems, door access systems, fire alarms and uninterruptible power supplies.
Main duties of the jobThe role will require participation in the current rolling 365 day shift pattern and the on call rota, with overtime as required. All applicants must have a positive, friendly and cooperative manner while being prepared to be flexible to meet the service needs of the Trust. The role requires the applicant to use their own initiative when undertaking a range of problem solving scenarios to allow for an outcome whilst adapting to the changing demands of the role. The post holder will also provide technical advice, guidance and where necessary supervision to other CFS staff, contractors and Trust colleagues alike.
Qualifications- Basic numeracy and literacy skills to Level 1 or equivalent.
- BTEC/ONC, City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a suitable engineering discipline.
- Completion of a recognised and accredited apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Completion of specialist engineering related training via formalised training or suitable experience.
- City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing of Electrical systems.
- City & Guilds 2377 Portable Appliance Testing.
- LV Competent Person Certificate.
- Knowledge and experience of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems typically found within a large NHS Acute Trust.
- Detailed knowledge and experience of electrical system requirements and regulations typically found within large NHS Acute Trust acquired through qualifications and relevant experience.
- Suitable and sufficient experience as a competent person at a level able to accept a permit to work from an authorised person.
- Experience of working within an NHS hospital environment.
- Experience of operating Building Management Systems (BMS).
- Complex fault diagnosis requiring interpretation of technical issues and formulation of technical solutions to improve performance.
- Detailed knowledge of the current UK Electrical Wiring Regulations (18th Edition).
- Ability to use one's own initiative when undertaking a range of problem solving scenarios to allow for satisfactory completion.
- Ability to adapt to the changing demands of the role, including emergency situations.
- Ability to prioritise own workload and the workloads of others ensuring high quality patient care and SLA targets are achieved.
- Regularly provide and receive routine and, on occasion, complex or sensitive information with Estate work colleagues, other Trust colleagues and external Trust/CFS contacts.
- Self motivated with a desire to improve current practices.
- Understand and sympathise with issues relating to clinical staff/patients where Estate work has an impact on the clinical environment.
- Ability to operate and use computer systems such as: electronic asbestos register, labour management system, pneumatic tube system, building management system, fire alarm systems.
- Ability to adopt a flexible approach to working hours and on call shift requirements.
- Knowledge of HTMs.
- Knowledge of planned preventative maintenance systems.
- Knowledge of building management systems (BMS).
- Must have a valid UK driving licence, be willing to use CHoICE vehicles and be able to travel to CHoICE managed sites.
- Ability to undertake moderate physical activities for long periods throughout a typical working day.
- Ability to complete tasks requiring short intensive bursts of effort before returning to moderate activity.Ability to undertake regular moving and handling activities.
- Requirement for highly developed physical dexterity, hand and eye coordination and manipulation of fine tools.
