Description

Are you a science specialist who is passionate about inspiring learners and finding new ways to make your subject come alive? Do you want to join a department that is genuinely growing, genuinely ambitious and genuinely committed to doing things differently? If so, we think you will feel right at home here.

As our new Science Lecturer, you will deliver high-quality, engaging teaching across science programmes from Level 1 to Level 3, covering both practical and theory elements across BTEC, T Levels and other programmes. You will work closely with fellow science lecturers and our science technicians to give learners the best possible experience and help them achieve their potential, whether they are progressing to higher education, employment or further study within the college.

This is a department at an exciting point of development. The team is growing its student cohort and its programme offer, and is actively developing innovative new approaches to delivery, including making use of a dedicated immersive room that creates genuinely distinctive learning experiences for science students. There are also real opportunities to take on broader responsibilities as the department grows, including course leadership and IQA roles, for those who want them.

We are an ambitious, forward thinking further education college in North London, proud to serve diverse communities across Barnet, Southgate and beyond. Our 2030 Vision is bold: to be a leading provider of learning and skills development, fostering exceptional educational experiences, driven by innovation, collaboration and excellence.

Our Science department at Southgate is a positive, supportive and collaborative team that is expanding in size and ambition. You will be joining colleagues who invest in each other, share ideas freely and are genuinely focused on learner success. The department's use of immersive technology to enhance science delivery is just one example of its commitment to innovation, and the growing team means there are real opportunities to develop your career beyond the classroom if you want to.

Key Responsibilities What You'll Be Doing

Here is a flavour of what you will be getting involved in:

  • Inspiring teaching: Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality, engaging science lessons across BTEC, T Level and other programmes at Levels 1 to 3, including both practical and theory sessions.
  • Innovative delivery: Contribute to the development of new and creative approaches to teaching and learning, including making use of the department's immersive room to offer learners a distinctive and exciting programme of study.
  • Learner success: Track learner progress, maintain accurate records and submit required data promptly, supporting learners to meet assessment deadlines and achieve strong outcomes.
  • Curriculum development: Contribute to the science team by developing new curriculum materials, liaising with part time colleagues and attending team meetings.
  • Pastoral support: Act as personal tutor to a group of students, attend course tutor meetings and keep parents and guardians informed about learning, behaviour, safeguarding and other key matters.
  • Professional development: Engage in CPD, including industrial placement opportunities where appropriate, to keep your subject knowledge current and enhance your teaching practice.
  • Wider contribution: Liaise with colleagues, management and external stakeholders, and contribute to the department's continued growth and improvement.
