Locum Consultant in Ophthalmology w/ SI in Cornea and Anterior Segment

We are looking for an enthusiastic locum consultant ophthalmologist with fellowship experience in Cornea and External Eye Disease. This is a great opportunity for candidates who want to join one of the biggest eye hospitals in the UK to deliver a high quality tertiary referral service to Birmingham and surrounding regions.

This is for a 12 month post starting January 2026.

Main duties of the job

This is a locum 12 month post supporting the corneal service at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre and Sandwell Hospital including acute corneal services for the regional ophthalmic A&E. The post holder will join an experienced and highly skilled corneal team in providing specialist services for the whole range of corneal and external eye disease including modern corneal transplant operations.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCOphth or an equivalent qualification
  • Higher Degree
Other Requirements
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Appropriate Immigration Status (where appropriate)
  • An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.
Clinical Effectiveness
  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit
Clinical Experience
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Ophthalmology
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of acute medical emergencies
  • GMC registration with License to Practice
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients
  • Fellowship in Cornea
  • Specialist interest in cornea and ocular surface disease
  • Formal training in teaching
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to Ophthalmology
  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research
