Weare looking for a dynamic individual to join our team within the EmergencyDepartment at the Leeds General Infirmary and St Jamess UniversityHospital. Thisis for one 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. Parttime working will be considered. The post will be available immediately.
TheTrust is committed to providing sustainable consultant-delivered services toensure the quality of the patient experience. Working patterns that providesenior cover throughout 24 hours per day, seven days per week will therefore berequired. Successful candidates will be expected to work with the Trust andtheir consultant staffs to deliver service patterns and job plans that meetthis objective.
Applicantsshould have established skills in Emergency Medicine and may have asubspecialty interest. A strongcommitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interestis desirable.
Excellentcommunication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching andservice development are essential.
Main duties of the jobThispost is part of a consultant team which delivers a 24hr Consultant presence inthe Emergency Departments. It isexpected that the newly appointed Consultant will share this commitment withall members of the current team. Werecognise the importance of ensuring that work patterns of our Consultants aresustainable.
Thesuccessful applicant should possess FRCEM (or FRCPCH or equivalent) and shouldbe included on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admittedto the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within theUK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy MedicalDirector and Clinical Director.
About usLeedsTeaching Hospitals NHS Trust has undertaken a major investment in its EmergencyMedicine services to provide specialist Consultant led trauma care at the LeedsGeneral Infirmary which has been designated a Major Trauma Centre, and a 24/7Consultant presence in the Emergency Department.
TheEmergency Departments in Leeds have an excellent reputation for quality,innovation and education. The Emergency Medicine service treats in excess of220,000 new patients per year. Acuteservices in Leeds have undergone extensive reconfiguration to deliver traumabased services and paediatrics on the LGI site and acute and elderly medicineat St Jamess. The Emergency Departments have undergone modifications toreflect these patient flows, including expansion of the Paediatric ED on theLGI site and Same Day Emergency Care unit at St James Hospital. All Consultants work across all areas of theEmergency Departments on both sites.

Job responsibilitiesThisis a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant in Emergency Medicine.
Thepost will be based at both the Leeds General Infirmary and St James UniversityEmergency Departments.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1 To deliver care to patients with Urgentcare needs at the LGI/ SJUH
Supervision of patients
Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings
2.2 To link with consultant colleagues inother relevant site specialist teams within the Urgent Care CSU and across theTrust
2.3 ED consultants are expected to work arota encompassing shifts covering the full24/7 cycle with a specific PA quantum allocated dependent for eachshift.
2.4 To contribute to research, teaching, andnew developments within the Emergency Departments. The post holder will beencouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical researchprograms on going in the department.
Person Specification Experience- Should have completed a recognised training programme in Emergency Medicine
- Experience of organising clinical audits
- Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a clinical shift in a major Emergency Department. Able to provide supervision and support to junior medical staff.
- Ability to organise and prioritise own service workload
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Emergency Medicine
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in complex cases
- Ability to take full and independent care of problems arising as emergencies within a teaching hospital context
- Teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
- Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
- Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
- Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
- Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
- Well organised and skilled in good time management.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
- Attendance at a management training course and evidence of learning from it
- Should have completed a recognised training programme in Emergency Medicine
- Special interest in:
- -Academic Research
- -Observational Medicine
- Or other areas deemed to be of benefit to LTHT
- Demonstrate higher training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
- Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
- Attendance at recognised management course.
- Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
- MB BS (or equivalent)
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Is up to date and fit to practise safely
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
- passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider
- having a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained through study at a UK school that you began when you were under 18
- having a degree-level academic qualification that was taught in English - if you studied abroad, youll need to apply through Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) for confirmation that your qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD
- You do not need to prove your knowledge of English if youve already passed an English Language assessment that is accepted by the relevant regulated professional body.
- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD and /or PhD)
- Membership of the College of Emergency Medicine or equivalent
