Thisis an appointment for two posts, for 10 PAs locum appointment for a Consultant in Acute Medicine. This postwill be available for a period of 6 Months. The post will be availableimmediately.
OurSDEC unit is co-located at SJUH with our Emergency Department (ED), maximisingreview by the right person in the right place first time, improving patient andstaff satisfaction and enabling admission avoidance. This is an exciting time to join ourexpanding team as we embed innovative ways of working to shape the future modelof acute medicine in Leeds. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated andcommitted individuals to join our team of Acute Medicine consultants and workwithin the Urgent Care CSU to drive forward our Acute Medicine & SDECservices.
We have two Acute Medical Units with a totalof 57 beds and a co-located 3 bedded Enhanced Care Area, called HOBS (HighObservation Area). We have a strong commitment to the delivery of same dayemergency care which operates a 7 day service and sees approximately 200patients per week, as well as delivering an excellent and establishedambulatory VTE service.
Applicantsshould possess a wide experience in Acute and General Medicine and haveexcellent team-working skills.
Main duties of the jobSuccessful applicants will work in all 3 areasof acute medicine (AMU, Enhanced Care and Same Day Emergency Care) and willcontribute to the out of hours rota (currently 1 in 8).

Job responsibilitiesThisis a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Acute Medicine
witha special interest in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and will deliver 8.5 PAsof direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs supporting professional activity.
Thepost will be based at St James Hospital. The acute medical floor consists of 3areas: Acute Medical Wards (J27 and J28), which also accommodate a short stayfunction, and an Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) (incorporating daily HotClinics and same day assessments). Collectively the acute medical floor areasadmit approximately 40 to 80 patients per day. In addition, there are directadmissions to acute cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, stroke andrespiratory medicine which by-pass the acute medical floor.
Thereare currently 7 consultants in acute medicine. The acute medicine directorateis currently planning to increase the strength and size of its acute consultantwork force, to support the delivery of a new same day emergency care unit.
Intotal, there are 10 higher specialty trainees in acute medicine in Leeds. Fiveare based on the acute medical floor, and the others are based full time inrelevant specialties but participate in the on-call rota. Junior doctors work4-6 month blocks in acute medicine, with additional doctors working on theacute floor when on-call. The department is well-staffed with FY1 doctors, FY2doctors and core trainees in medicine and ACCS.
Thedepartment currently has two undergraduate firms during the academic year.Third year and fourth year medical students from the University of Leeds workon the acute medical floor and participate in regular teaching sessions.
Person Specification Experience- Should have completed a recognised training programme or CESR in Acute Medicine
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all areas of acute medicine including acute hospital services and ambulatory services.
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
- Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
- Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
- Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
- Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
- Well organised and skilled in good time management.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
- Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
- Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
- Attendance at recognised management course.
- Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
- passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider
- having a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained through study at a UK school that you began when you were under 18
- having a degree-level academic qualification that was taught in English - if you studied abroad, youll need to apply through Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) for confirmation that your qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD
- You do not need to prove your knowledge of English if youve already passed an English Language assessment that is accepted by the relevant regulated professional body.
- Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.
