This post is for a fixed term, full time Consultant Psychiatrist to provide medical leadership to a community rehabilitation team.
This is a 10PA Consultant Psychiatrist post at the Southwark Community Rehabilitation Team branch 2, one of three teams that comprise the Southwark Assertive Outreach and Rehabilitation Team (AORT).
The rehabilitation team serves non forensic Southwark mental health patients in supported placements and residential care, offering specialist care for people with severe mental illness and co morbid conditions such as substance misuse and personality disorder. Patients often have significant impairment, treatment resistance, complex needs across multiple domains, and may be difficult to engage or may have experienced protracted inpatient admissions. The service focuses on recovery, maximising independence and promoting successful step down to less supported care.
Main duties of the jobClinical duties of post holder
The main duties of the post holder are to provide psychiatry consultant leadership and clinical input. These responsibilities are outlined in the full Job Description.
Job responsibilities• Provide enthusiastic, flexible joint clinical leadership and consultant input into the team.
• Take consultant and wherever necessary RC responsibility for patients in a range of supported settings in the community.
• Provide RC responsibility and Section 12 cover to patients under your care where detention under the Mental Health Act is required, including admission under an inpatient service or Section 37/41 and Community Treatment Orders.
• Work flexibly and creatively in a multidisciplinary team, promoting informed risk taking and anti discriminatory practice.
• Liaise with external placement providers, inpatient and community psychiatrists, General Practitioners and other professionals.
• Provide active leadership in planning accommodation moves and offer expert risk assessment and management skills in complex care of people with severe mental illness.
• Ensure excellence in evidence based treatments and serve as a source of support and information to patients, carers, referrers and team members.
• Represent the unit at CAG and care pathway meetings, and provide reciprocal Approved Clinician cover as required.
• Keep up to date with developments in community/rehab pathways and maintain strong relationships with GPs, local authority social services, housing providers and voluntary organisations.
• Undertake responsibilities as an approved clinician under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act 1983 as needed.
• Work flexibly with other mental trusts, with the voluntary sector, and within SLaM to ensure good coordination of care.

Qualifications- Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College guidelines).
- Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
- Experience in relevant specialties such as forensic psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, home treatment or addictions.
- Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
- Included on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry or within six months.
- Approved clinician status and under S12, OR able to achieve within three months of appointment.
- Excellent knowledge in specialty.
- Excellent clinical skills using a bio psycho social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
- Good oral and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
- Significant experience in risk assessment and management, including positive risk taking.
- Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
- Experience working in different cultural contexts and sensitivity to equity and diversity issues.
- Significant teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Demonstrated commitment to shared leadership, collaboration and effective multidisciplinary teamwork.
- Leadership and management experience.
- Continuous professional development and research or service evaluation participation.
- Use and appraisal of clinical evidence.
- Active participation in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes.
- Formal training or qualifications in supervision.
- Reflection on the purpose of CPD undertaken.
- Experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation.
- Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
- Lead quality improvement projects resulting in service change or improved patient outcomes.

Salary: £93,666 - £126,281 per annum, depending on experience.
