Locally Employed Doctor (Higher) in Chemical Pathology

Applications are invited for a 12 months fixed term LED Higher to join the Chemical Pathology Department at Heartlands Hospital, to commence as soon as possible. Chemical Pathology uniquely combines clinical input into the day-to-day function of the clinical chemistry laboratory with direct clinical care to patients with metabolic disorders, including lipid disorders, disorders of calcium and bone metabolism, nutritional disorders, diabetes mellitus, and inherited metabolic diseases.
Main duties of the job- Participate in outpatient clinics for lipid and metabolic disorders under consultant supervision.
- Provide clinical advice on biochemical test selection and interpretation.
- Liaise with clinical teams to optimise patient investigation and management.
- Contribute to development of clinical guidelines and laboratory protocols.
- Support implementation of quality and safety initiatives within the department.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
- Use laboratory and hospital IT systems appropriately.
- Participate in audit, data collection, and reporting for service improvement.
- Work within agreed protocols and under consultant supervision.
- Exercise independent clinical judgement appropriate to level of experience.

Job responsibilitiesUniversity Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) provides exposure to a wide array of chemistry laboratory tests, with a high throughput of both routine and specialist investigations. Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham serves as the regional centre for adults with Inherited Metabolic Disorders, providing rare and complex case experience.
The Clinical Chemistry Laboratories are based at Heartlands Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and Good Hope Hospital, with clinics held across all three sites. The post offers opportunities for involvement in clinical service, audit, research, and teaching, providing excellent experience for those considering a future in Chemical Pathology or metabolic medicine.
Person Specification Qualifications- Full registration with the General Medical Council GMC, with licence to practice.
- Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice.
- Able to demonstrate basic clinical knowledge appropriate to level of responsibility
- Minimum 2 years' post-foundation clinical experience.
- Understanding of principles of clinical biochemistry and laboratory medicine.
- Experience in audit and quality improvement.
- Previous experience of research and audit.
- Previous experience of change management and problem solving.
- Experience of implementing evidence-based practice.
