Job Description
The School

Law is a growing and dynamic part of York Business School. Our LLB programme launched in 2018 and has developed rapidly; in 2020 we established the York St John Law Clinic, which gives students hands on experience in providing legal advice under the guidance of experienced staff. From 2023 we introduced a suite of MLaw and LLM programmes. Clinical teaching is embedded within our programmes, enabling students to apply legal principles in authentic contexts, build confidence and gain experience in professional ways of working. We have high expectations of, and aspirations for, our students and we aim to create engaging teaching and assessment which fosters understanding and develops valuable transferable skills, enhances employability and places law in context to support analytical, critical thinking and problem solving. We pride ourselves in knowing our students as individuals and in offering high levels of personal support. In September 2026, we move to our new campus at King's Manor in the heart of York.

The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic new Lecturer and Law Clinic Supervisor to join us on this journey through supervising students and casework in York St John Law Clinic (with support from the Director of Professional Practice) and contributing to teaching on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This will include delivering lectures, seminars, workshops and small group tutorials. You will develop engaging teaching materials and assessments and offer timely and constructive feedback. You will be allocated students for whom you are responsible for providing pastoral support throughout their time with us. Over time, you will be expected to contribute towards our developing research agenda.

This role is eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.

We are open to applications from candidates who wish to work part-time, perhaps alongside maintaining a role in legal practice.

Required skills and experience

You will have experience as a solicitor, barrister or legal executive. You will demonstrate either teaching experience or an aptitude for teaching gained through training, supporting or supervising trainees/apprentices within private client, landlord/tenant, property, personal injury and clinical negligence, immigration and/or Court of Protection. You will have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or be willing to work towards achieving it within 18 months of your appointment.

We offer a range of family friendly and inclusive policies and facilities and welcome applications from individuals from under represented backgrounds.

Benefits
  • Excellent annual leave entitlement, including five discretionary university closure days over the Christmas period
  • Disability leave (applies to staff who have disclosed a disability and is also available to staff with disabled dependants)
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Paid leave for Armed Forces Reservists
  • On campus courses, one to one tutorials, and online resources to help you develop your digital skills and work with new software
  • Relocation expenses package for certain roles
  • Reimbursement of Skilled Worker Visa application fees and Visa loan scheme for additional costs (if applicable to the role)
