The Role

We are seeking an experienced and technically capable individual to lead a small sub-team within our multidisciplinary software group, with responsibility for around four or five engineers.

Our software projects span a wide range of applications, including embedded systems for radar and sensing technologies, IoT devices, and advanced communication systems. We work across sectors such as defence and healthcare, delivering solutions that combine embedded software, electronics, FPGA, cloud, and system-level functionality.

This is a hands-on role that combines technical delivery and software development with people leadership. The successful candidate will provide line management for their team, support project planning and resourcing, contribute directly to engineering work, and help develop and maintain best practices across the group. Responsibilities of the role will include:

• Providing line management and mentoring for a small group of engineers, including career development, performance reviews, and resource planning.
• Contributing directly to embedded software projects and acting as a technical lead within multi-disciplinary teams.
• Helping to shape software process, and the technology roadmap.

The Person

We are looking for a well-rounded engineer who has a broad background in embedded software development. The ideal candidate will be comfortable contributing to project delivery while mentoring and leading a small team in a collaborative, delivery-focused environment. Our ideal candidate will bring a subset of the experience listed below, but strong potential, adaptability, and sound judgement is just as important to us:

• Experience with embedded software development, covering a relevant subset of technologies such as bare metal, RTOS environments, embedded Linux, and ideally exposure to higher layer languages and application frameworks.
• Relevant embedded experience in areas such as device drivers, DSP, algorithm design and implementation, communications and application layer protocols, AI and ML, user interfaces, and working effectively at the boundary between software and electronics (though this is not an electronics design role).
• At least some experience of line management or team leadership, for example having led small project teams or conducted appraisals and now looking to take the next step in responsibility.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to cost and present engineering work clearly to clients and colleagues.
• Ideally, experience in a fee-for-service or consultancy environment, with an understanding of commercial and delivery pressures.
