Job Description

Your new company

Hays is working with a long-established and highly respected main building contractor that is continuing to grow. The business delivers new-build and refurbishment projects across a range of building sectors and has a strong reputation for developing and retaining its people.

As part of this growth, they are looking for either an existing Junior Project Manager who is ready for greater responsibility, or an experienced Site Manager who wants to step up into their first Project Manager role.
This is a genuine development opportunity. The business is not necessarily seeking the finished article. It wants an ambitious construction professional it can train, develop and support over the long term.

Your new role

You will develop into a broader Project Management position, taking responsibility for the successful delivery of building projects while working closely with the Site Manager and wider project team.
You will generally manage one project at a time. On smaller schemes, there may occasionally be responsibility for more than one project.

Projects can be located across a wide geographical area, depending on the live workload when you join. You will typically be expected on site three to four days per week, although this may vary where a strong Site Manager is managing the day-to-day operation.

Flexibility is essential. You must be comfortable travelling and staying away from home when required. Mileage, travel and accommodation associated with the role are fully covered.

What you'll need to succeed

This opportunity could suit either:

  • A Junior Project Manager from a building or main contracting background who is ready to take on more responsibility.
  • An experienced Site Manager who is ready to progress into their first Project Manager role.

You should also have:

  • A strong building construction background, ideally gained with a main contractor.
  • A valid SMSTS qualification.
  • A valid CSCS card appropriate to the role.
  • A solid understanding of site operations and project delivery.
  • The ambition and attitude to develop into a successful Project Manager.
  • Flexibility regarding project location and the ability to stay away when required.
  • A genuine interest in building a long-term career with an established contractor.

What you'll get in return

  • A salary of £45,000 to £55,000.
  • A genuine route into, or progression within, Project Management.
  • Training, support and long-term development.
  • Mileage and business travel fully covered.
  • Accommodation fully covered when required.
  • Responsibility for varied building projects, generally one at a time.
  • The opportunity to join a relaxed, loyal and established business with strong employee retention.

Start date: The preferred start is early 2027, although the business can appoint sooner if the right person becomes available.
