What is the purpose of this job?Rail Delivery Group (RDG) partners with Britain's train operators to put customers at the heart of everything we do, delivering essential services and dedicated experts who keep the nation's railway running efficiently.
The purpose of this job is to support RDG colleagues by delivering reliable, responsive and industry leading IT infrastructure services.
The Junior Infrastructure Engineer will support RDG's IT infrastructure operations, providing technical assistance to internal and external stakeholders. This role is essential in maintaining and improving both on premises and cloud based systems, while also contributing to project delivery and first/second line support in collaboration with the IT Infrastructure Manager, Service Desk, and Application teams.
What can I expect to do in this job?This isn't an exhaustive list, but things you can expect to be involved with include:
Technical Support & Operations
Provide first and second line support for hardware, software, and network issues.
Serve as an escalation point for the support services team, assisting with complex technical issues.
Deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows, Mac, Linux servers and endpoints.
Support SaaS and on premises services including Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Active Directory, and Group Policy.
Onsite and remote meeting room support, including patching and compliance.
Infrastructure & Cloud
Assist in maintaining RDG's hybrid infrastructure (on premises, Azure, AWS).
Participate in infrastructure deployment and automation using tools like PowerShell, Bash, Ansible, Terraform, Git, and GitLab CI/CD.
Monitor and maintain virtual infrastructure and backup systems; contribute to disaster recovery planning and testing.
Project & Collaboration
Execute assigned tasks in infrastructure projects.
Collaborate with cross functional teams to meet business goals.
Maintain clear and comprehensive infrastructure documentation.
Security & Best Practices
Implement IT security best practices.
Participate in out of hours maintenance when required.
What experience, skills and knowledge do I need?Technical Skills
Proficiency in administering and supporting Linux, Windows, and Apple macOS operating systems.
Experience deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting servers and applications in production environments.
Strong understanding of network fundamentals including IP addressing, subnetting, routing, VLANs, firewalls, DNS, DHCP, and 802.1x.
Familiarity with virtualised environments and hypervisors.
Hands on experience with SaaS and on premises services such as Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra ID, Intune, Exchange, Teams, Active Directory, and Group Policy.
Ability to deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot both Windows and Linux endpoints and servers.
Cloud & Automation
Working knowledge of IaaS and PaaS cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure and AWS.
Exposure to infrastructure automation and scripting using tools such as PowerShell, Bash, Ansible, Terraform, Git, and GitLab CI/CD.
Understanding of hybrid infrastructure environments and cloud adoption strategies.
Security & Compliance
Awareness of cybersecurity principles and frameworks (e.g., ISO 27001, NIST).
Commitment to implementing IT security best practices across infrastructure and endpoint environments.
Experience monitoring and maintaining backup systems, contributing to disaster recovery planning and testing.
Support & Service Delivery
Proven experience delivering 1st and 2nd line IT support in a professional environment.
Ability to act as an escalation point for complex technical issues.
Familiarity with ITSM and ticketing systems such as Jira, ServiceNow, or NinjaOne.
Documentation & Communication
High level of written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, professional documentation independently.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical and non technical stakeholders.
Strong fault finding and diagnostic capabilities, with a methodical and analytical approach to problem solving.
Soft Skills
Strong time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
Adaptability and a proactive attitude toward learning and continuous improvement.
Collaborative mindset with the ability to work well within cross functional teams.
Desirable Certifications
CompTIA Network+, Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, or equivalent industry recognised certifications.
