We're looking for an exceptional Junior Developerto help us make a difference to our planet.
As our Junior Developer, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home.This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

This role is within theAnalysis, Visualisation and Data (AVD) team, who are responsible for developing, maintaining andsupporting scientific visualisation andanalysis software used in research and operations in the Met Office.
We mainly work in the public domain, owning the SciTools project on GitHub and contributing to a range of open-source projects.The primary programming language we use is Python, with libraries in a variety of languages contributing to the capabilities we provide.
Additionally, we provision and maintain the conda based Python environments used by our communities including operational systems.
We are evolving our tool sets to provide capabilities to the scientific research and operational meteorology communities.These capabilities are part of the Met Office making best use of our supercomputer to work at the forefront of weather and climate science for protection, prosperity and well-being. We will help you develop your skills, express yourself and make a real impact.
This is a unique opportunity to work with a cutting-edge development team that is creating vital tools on which Met Office science depends.

As our Junior Developer, your total reward package will be up to £42,724 annually, which includes:
- An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
- Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) you will be paid £2,200 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this marketdrivenallowance from April 2024 until March 2026 in your monthly pay
- Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave
- Expert by Nature: Demonstrable knowledge of software development ideally using Python, via experience or a relevant degree. (Lead Criteria)
- Keep Evolving: Understanding of software package management, ideally using conda.
- Live and breathe it: Problem-solving mindset and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
- BetterTogether: Ability to work effectively in a team: taking responsibility for tasks, organising your own work and contributing to the delivery of shared goals.
- Force for Good: Good communication skills, written and verbal
