Role Purpose
The Clinical Nurse Manager 1 (CNM1) in the Oncology Day Unit provides clinical leadership and operational management of the unit. The role ensures high-quality patient care, safe administration of chemotherapy /biological and targeted treatments and effective staff coordination. The CNM1 acts as a role model, promoting evidence-based nursing practice, continuous professional development, and compliance with national standards and guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership
- Oversee and participate in direct patient care, including chemotherapy administration, infusion therapy, symptom management, and patient education.
- Promote a culture of excellence, safety, and compassionate care.
- Provide clinical guidance and support to nursing staff, fostering professional growth.
Operational & Staff Management
- Organise and manage the day-to-day running of the Oncology Day Unit.
- Allocate and supervise nursing staff, ensuring appropriate skill mix and safe staffing levels.
- Participate in recruitment, induction, and ongoing appraisal of staff.
- Promote a team environment that encourages collaboration, communication, and accountability.
- Coordinate and schedule appointments for new oncology/non oncology patients ensuring timely access to assessment and treatment services.
- Provide telephone triage and clinical advice for existing patients, escalating concerns appropriately and liaising with the multidisciplinary team.
Quality & Governance
- Ensure compliance with Blackrock Clinic policies, nursing regulations, and national clinical guidelines.
- Maintain accurate clinical and administrative records.
- Monitor and audit clinical practice, ensuring adherence to infection control, medication safety, and patient care standards.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives within the unit.
Patient & Family Care
- Act as a resource and point of contact for patients and families.
- Ensure patients receive timely information about their treatment, care options, and follow-up.
- Support the psychosocial needs of patients and families in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
Professional Development
- Facilitate ongoing education and training for nursing staff.
- Maintain own professional competence and actively engage in continuing professional development (CPD).
- Promote evidence-based practice and encourage staff to participate in research and clinical audits.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with oncologists, pharmacists, allied health professionals, and administration to coordinate patient care.
- Participate in MDT meetings and contribute nursing insights to treatment planning.
- Serve as a liaison between nursing staff, management, and other departments.
Qualifications & Experience
- Registered General Nurse (RGN) with An Bord Altranais (NMBI) registration.
- Minimum of 3-5 years post-registration nursing experience, with oncology experience preferred.
- Evidence of continued professional development in oncology nursing or management.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution abilities.
- Sound clinical judgment and decision-making.
- Ability to plan, organise, and prioritise tasks effectively.
- Commitment to quality, safety, and patient centred care.
- Proficiency in clinical documentation, audit, and reporting.

- Staff retention, satisfaction, and professional development metrics.
