Band 5 Hours: 33.50 hours per week. All MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

Milton Keynes University Hospital Imaging Department is expanding with a new Imaging Scanning Centre opening in 2026 and two Community Diagnostic Centres at Lloyds Court and Whitehouse Park. Interventional Radiology is a specialist field with procedures such as vascular work, biopsies, drainages and vascular line insertions performed using minimally invasive techniques with Fluoroscopy, CT and Ultrasound. Nursing roles are required throughout the department. The Nursing team works closely with Interventional Radiologists, Radiographers, Sonographers and the Clinical support team throughout the patient2s journey through the Imaging Department.

Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will be an RN with a caring nature, excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to organise and use their initiative. To ensure effective nursing input and participation wherever appropriate within Imaging, this involves the delivery of patient care daily. This care will be provided while working within a wide range of radiology procedures (including CT, Interventional Radiology, MRI and Ultrasound) and within professional guidelines. The post requires flexibility to respond to changing needs within the department. Radiology is a 24/7 service and out-of-hours working may be required.

Job responsibilitiesClinical and Professional Responsibilities
The post holder will independently manage patients and provide high-standard care within the specialty, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver individualized direct patient care. This includes assessment, planning, and implementation of patient care, history taking, physical examination, evaluating needs, and preparing patients safely for interventional procedures.
Communication and relationship building
The post holder will provide and receive sensitive information where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassuring skills are required. This may be due to agreement, coordination or barriers to understanding. Communicate with patients, relatives or visitors to enable informed decision-making.
Responsibilities for analysis
Provide high standards of individualized nursing care by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. Recognise and report changes in patient condition and escalate appropriately.
Responsibilities for planning & organisation of activities
Coordinate and organise own workload, in conjunction with the imaging nurse lead. Be involved with varied interventional radiology lists to ensure work follows principles of urgency and priority in a rapidly changing workflow.
Responsibility for Patient/Client Care, Treatment and Therapy
Demonstrate patient safety by ensuring all treatment and procedures are carried out by competent and appropriately trained staff. Act as a patient advocate.
Development of policies and services
Uphold safety and quality standards, contribute to Clinical Governance processes relevant to interventional radiology procedures. Contribute to effective use of resources and staff to achieve value for money without detriment to patient care. Assist in maintaining equipment and stock levels with safety and economy.
Managing people
Be responsible for own actions and workload, able to work unsupervised as well as part of a multidisciplinary team. Support ongoing professional development of registered staff.
Responsibility for information resources
Use IT systems essential to day-to-day work including CRIS, PACS and Cerner. Ensure data accuracy (name, date of birth, address, postcode, GP and telephone number) in line with departmental policies.
Research and development
Analyse and synthesise research findings to implement evidence-based practice. Participate in clinical and organisational audit as required to continually evaluate service effectiveness.
Freedom to Act
Work in accordance with hospital and department policies, procedures and guidelines. Maintain professional accountability.
Other Responsibilities
Have a flexible approach to contracted hours and work locations. Be prepared to participate in a 24/7 imaging service delivery model.
Person specifications Qualifications and knowledge- RGN/RN Adult
- Post Registration course related to surgery or interventional radiology
- NMC UK State registered Adult Nurse
- Evidence of keeping informed of current interventional radiology techniques & practices via short courses, self-directed learning or study days
- Knowledge of national imaging standards (e.g., BMUS, IR(ME)R 2017, IRR '17 and associated codes of practice)
- Computer literacy (MS Teams, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Understanding of medication management, non-IV and IV medications and blood products
- Data protection, FOI and confidentiality within NHS
- Ability to obtain and analyse clinical data to recognise deteriorating patients
- Ability to calculate drug doses for infusions requiring concentration adjustments
- Experience caring for patients with acute and long-term conditions
- Relevant experience within the last 24 months as a Registered Nurse in a UK acute hospital
- Familiarity with HIS-Cerner, CRIS and PACS (Insignia)
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Self-motivation and ability to learn and develop
- Logical decision making and problem solving
- Ability to work to agreed protocols and standards of practice
