The modern day business climate is more challenging and dynamic and it forces the economic agents to seek alternative sources of strategic advantages. One example is the emphasis placed on supporting learning and the continuous development of the organization of learning. This concept is applicable within public entities, such as hospitals. The project aims to support a higher understanding of the learning organization to lead to superior application in real life situations, starting with the definition of the concept and its context in a hospital, and the identification of its advantages and disadvantages.
Definition of the learning organizationOne representative definition: "Organization that acquires knowledge and innovates fast enough to survive and thrive in a rapidly changing environment." Learning organizations create a culture that encourages and supports continuous employee learning, critical thinking, and risk taking with new ideas; allow mistakes and value employee contributions; learn from experience and experiment; and disseminate new knowledge throughout the organization for incorporation into day-to-day activities. The University of Edinburgh defines the concept as an organisation that learns and encourages learning among its people, promoting exchange of information between employees to create a more knowledgeable workforce.
Notes: definitions in the literature emphasize the implementation for sustained success and knowledge transfer across the institution.
The teaching hospitalThe teaching hospital is, in its nature, a learning organization since it relies on the continuous formation of doctors. It welcomes students and graduates and forms them into the medical profession. Supervisors guide novices, and patients are supervised by a team of physicians. The patient experience can vary depending on context.
