Job Description

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) are offering sponsorship for qualified Nurses and Midwives to complete the SCPHN qualification at level 7, to become a Health Visitor. The post is fully funded by NHSE, and successful candidates will be paid AFC Band 6 (Annex 21). Candidates are required to be NMC registrants, have a Level 6 qualification at 2:2 or above and be able to commence the programme in September 2025 at Kings College university or at LSBU (London South Bank University) or January 2026 at University of Greenwich.

At LGT, SCPHNs (Health Visitors and School Nurses) lead on the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme, provision of Universal Services and Targeted interventions to those children and families with the greatest need.

We are invested in the development of Public Health Nursing, and this is underpinned by our Public Health Nursing strategy and training programme for all roles within the PHN teams.

All Health Visitors and Assistant HV Practitioners have corporate membership with the Institute of Health Visiting (IHV) which offers a wealth of professional training programmes and resources to support excellent practice.

Main duties of the job

What we are looking for:

  • An interest in wider determinants of health to tackle public health needs and the drivers that influence our profession.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills

  • Leadership qualities and the willingness to take responsibility and make appropriate decisions.
  • A high level of academic skills and the ability to cope with a very intense year with academic deadlines.
  • A reflective learner able to build on previous experience and knowledge.

If you are successfully shortlisted, interviews will take place at Downham Health Centre BR1 5EP - on either Monday 13th October or Monday 20th October. The interview will be in 2 parts over one day starting from 9am; part 1 shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend together as a group to discuss an unseen topic/question. Part 2 will be the individual, panelled interviews where you will be invited to deliver a short 5-minute presentation at the beginning; details for the latter will be provided once candidates are shortlisted.

Candidates are required to hold a full UK driving license and have access to a car.

Job responsibilities

Current NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery or evidence of application for NMC registration and confirmed NMC registration within 2 months of the start date. This is a postgraduate diploma route so a 2:1 /2:2 Honours Degree is necessary and also dependent on acceptance at the approved SCPHN HEI. Please refer to the candidate guidance for HEI details

Person Specification Education and Qualification
  • Current NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery or evidence of application for NMC registration and confirmed NMC registration within 2 months of the start date
  • DipHE (or above) qualification equivalent to 120 credits at level 5 (of the Higher Education Credit Framework for England) or evidence of previous education and learning at this level
  • Evidence of continual professional development at level 6
  • Degree
Fitness to Practice
  • Is up to date and fit to practice safely

Literacy and Numeracy
  • Literacy and Numeracy at the level of the National Qualifications Framework at level 1-2 for Numeracy (equivalent of GCSE) and 3-4 for Literacy (equivalent of A level).
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the Public Health role of contemporary health visiting & working in community settings
  • Knowledge of local and national policies which influence the provision of health visiting
  • Current knowledge of safeguarding issues
  • Knowledge of quality issues, the audit process and clinical governance
Experience
  • Experience of working within multidisciplinary teams
  • Evidence of involvement in the management of difficult situations and conflict resolution
  • Experience of managing staff within a team
  • Evidence of working without direct supervision and managing own workload
