Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a unit health and safety team, with responsibility for leading the IDS community in identifying improvements in health and safety across the business. We are looking for a motivated, proactive individual, focused on adding value to the business through effective engagement with staff and project managers. The role is essential to our business in assessing compliance with our system and external standards, as well as identifying opportunities for improvement. It offers a chance to make a difference in how we work on projects and interact with customers.

Reporting to the Unit HSSW Manager, this is a full-time role with key duties including:

  1. Promoting the use of our common processes to improve performance and support collaboration across the Group.
  2. Supporting and promoting the routine use of Step to add value to the business.
  3. Fostering a culture of continuous improvement in the management of the Unit-proactively engaging with and mentoring project HSW focal points.
  4. Assisting with project WIN bids and DO implementation stages.
  5. Providing or arranging health and safety training for staff in the Region.
  6. Reporting to the Unit GM on health and safety performance, including trend analysis and dissemination of lessons learned.
  7. Supporting portfolios in closing out non-conformities and escalating issues when necessary.
  8. Contributing to or undertaking internal investigations as required.
  9. Keeping abreast of developments in relevant legislation and practice, and acting upon any changes.
  10. Representing the Unit externally, liaising with enforcement authorities and other bodies as necessary.
  11. Working with the Unit HR team to ensure employment policies incorporate health and safety requirements.
  12. Promoting incident reporting and positive interventions across the unit.
  13. Coordinating health and safety issues with the Unit's Business Management Systems Manager.
  14. Ensuring the dissemination of health and safety information within the Unit.
  15. Representing the Unit on health and safety matters at relevant meetings as directed by the Unit Health & Safety Lead.
  16. Auditing and inspecting offices and sites within the Unit.
  17. Reviewing and updating the Unit Well-Being Plan regularly.
  18. Monitoring Unit health and safety objectives.

Key Performance Indicators include:

  • 100% mandatory H&S training
  • STEP compliance
  • Use of Connect Business
  • Budget management (Bids/Projects)

Additional responsibilities involve:

  • Undertaking continuous professional development to stay current with legislation and guidance.
  • Developing commercial thought leadership and contributing to the practice site.
  • Active participation in the C&O community within IDS.

Reporting to the Unit HSW Manager, responsibilities include:

  • Promoting a safety culture across the Unit.
  • Providing health and safety advice to staff and managers.
  • Ensuring effective communication of health and safety information.
  • Reviewing and updating the Well-Being Plan.
  • Auditing and inspecting offices and sites.
  • Undertaking safety training and accident investigations as needed.
  • Keeping up-to-date with health and safety legislation and practices.
  • Liaising with enforcement authorities.
  • Preparing monthly health and safety reports.
  • Coordinating with safety managers at various levels.
  • Representing the Unit on health and safety matters.
  • Travel willingness to international locations, including high or extreme risk areas, up to 2 weeks at a time.

Candidates must hold a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent, and be a Graduate Member of IOSH (Grad IOSH or above). Operational experience, particularly in international development, is preferred, along with a solid understanding of health and safety legislation in challenging contexts. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, databases, reports, and data analysis is required. Excellent communication, planning, and time management skills are essential, along with a working knowledge of health and safety management systems. Willingness to travel internationally is mandatory.
