Job Description

Join a leading Upper Tier COMAH site as our Health & Safety Manager, where your expertise will help protect people, strengthen process safety and drive a culture of continuous improvement across the operation.

Purpose of the role

The Health & Safety Manager is responsible for leading and managing the site's health and safety management systems in partnership with site leadership. This role ensures compliance with ICL Group and UK regulatory requirements. The Health and Safety Manager provides leadership and functional guidance with authority to promote a safe and healthy workplace whilst driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Accountabilities
  • Support the Site Manager in ensuring compliance with the COMAH Regulations (site is Upper Tier COMAH)
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and company management systems for the West Thurrock site.
  • Actively participate as part of the site leadership team and provide advice to the site leadership team on health and safety matters.
  • Identify and implement health and safety improvements for the West Thurrock site to reduce workplace injuries and exposures.
  • Support the Group SHE Manager and Associate Director, Regulatory Affairs in group wide SHE activities such as auditing.
  • Lead and develop the Health and Safety team at West Thurrock site.
  • Manage the site processes including induction, contractor management, emergency response drills.
  • Audit key management control systems e.g. permit to work to identify and correct deficiencies.
  • Liaise as required with third parties in relation to health and safety e.g., Essex County Fire and Rescue, HSE, Thurrock Council.
  • Measure and report key site health and safety metrics to the site leadership team and group.
  • Lead investigations of accidents, injuries and incidents and ensure corrective actions are implemented.

  • Confidence to represent the site during regulatory visits, inspections and formal discussions.
  • Practical and visible leadership style.
  • Personal conviction with high (HS) standards.
  • Calm under pressure and able to resolve conflict.
  • Significant HS leadership experience (min 8 years) within the chemical, process or another closely related high-hazard manufacturing environment.
  • Strong practical working knowledge of a range of key health and safety control systems e.g., permit to work , COSHH, risk assessment, CDM, MOC.
  • Managing stakeholder relationships.
  • Leading incident investigations.
  • Experience in leading or developing an HS team.
  • Experience in emergency response, trained as an incident controller.
  • Developing and delivery of HS training programs.
  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent professional qualification
  • Able to work extended days to support plant maintenance events
  • Occasional travel to other ICL sites to support audit program and other group SHE activities.
