As Head of Trade Surveillance, you will play a central role in safeguarding the integrity of trading operations by leading all aspects of trade surveillance across European markets.

You will collaborate with cross functional teams to review existing programmes, identify areas for enhancement, and implement strategic improvements that align with both internal policies and external regulations.

What you'll do:
  • Lead a team of compliance professionals responsible for overseeing, reviewing, and enhancing the trade surveillance programme for market abuse across multiple regional business lines.
  • Drive reviews of current surveillance programmes in partnership with advisory compliance, technology teams, first line business units, and risk partners to ensure alignment with regulatory expectations such as FCA and CBI requirements.
  • Respond to regulatory enquiries or investigations related to market abuse or disorderly trading activities by coordinating with internal stakeholders and external regulators.
  • Execute responsibilities in accordance with global compliance mandates and regulatory compliance management programmes to maintain high standards of oversight.
  • Lead quarterly meetings with regional compliance teams to share insights on emerging risks and trends identified through surveillance activities.
  • Design, document, and maintain detailed surveillance procedures that ensure comprehensive oversight while supporting high quality analyst reviews using advanced technology solutions.
  • Oversee the implementation of global strategies for developing and enhancing surveillance platforms at the regional level, ensuring consistency with organisational objectives.
  • Calibrate surveillance systems by tuning alerts and conducting quality assurance reviews to optimise effectiveness and accuracy.
What you bring:
  • A university degree is required; a postgraduate qualification is highly desirable for this senior level position.
  • A proven track record in brokerage compliance or first line risk controls within markets at a top tier bank is essential for success in this role.
  • Proven track record operating trade surveillance systems (including communications monitoring) within regulated environments is necessary.
  • Experience working at or closely with European regulators such as FCA or CBI in market surveillance is highly advantageous.
  • Comprehensive understanding of European laws, rules, regulations related to financial markets as well as advanced knowledge of compliance strategies and risk management frameworks is required.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are needed-including public speaking abilities-and well developed listening skills are vital for stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated people leadership experience focused on talent development, coaching, and building high performing teams is essential.
  • Ability to operate effectively within fast moving environments while managing multiple priorities simultaneously is important for this position.
  • Strategic thinking capabilities combined with sound judgement are required to achieve optimal risk/reward balance when making decisions affecting compliance operations.
  • Advanced relationship building skills coupled with sensitivity towards diverse perspectives are necessary for influencing positive cultural outcomes within the team.
