Volunteer as a school governor and make a difference to the lives of children and young people in your community.

What Governors Do

A school's governing body has three main functions:

• Ensure that the school has a clear vision and direction.
• Hold the headteacher accountable for the school's performance.
• Make sure that the school's money is well spent.

Governors are involved in a range of school matters, including recruitment, finance, and curriculum. They provide a strong link between the school and the local community and offer an independent view to support long term development and improvement.

Responsibilities

• Help children fulfil their aspirations.
• Model the values of the community and make a difference to young people.
• Meet new people and bring a fresh perspective to board work.
• Develop new skills and knowledge through governor training.

Qualifications

There is no requirement to be a parent or an education professional; schools value a diverse range of skills and perspectives.

Commitment

Governance boards meet at least once per term and governors are expected to visit the school. Training opportunities are available to help governors undertake their duties.
