Main duties of the job

Are you an experienced Ophthalmologist with a special interest in glaucoma, seeking a new and rewarding opportunity?

Join our dynamic and forward-thinking Eye Department as a Specialty Doctor and become part of a progressive NHS Trust committed to excellence in patient care.

With over 120,000 outpatient visits, 6,000 inpatient cases, and 24,000 eye casualty attendances annually, you'll gain exposure to a diverse and complex patient population.

Our Unit features a state-of-the-art outpatient department and modern operating theatres, equipped with the latest technology. The Glaucoma Team is a vibrant, innovative group comprising 4 Consultants, 3 Specialist Doctors, 2 Specialty Doctors, Fellows, and Specialist Nurses, delivering both traditional glaucoma surgery and MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery).

As a Specialty Doctor, you will:

Manage complex glaucoma cases and contribute to high standards of care.Participate in regular regional teaching and local glaucoma meetings.Support the training and development of AHPs and junior medical staff.

Job responsibilities

As a Specialty Doctor in Eye Unit, you will:

Deliver expert care in managing complex glaucoma cases, working closely with consultants to ensure the highest standards of patient outcomes.

Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, contributing to a supportive and communicative clinical environment.

Support education and training, mentoring junior doctors and trainees, and sharing your expertise to foster professional growth.

Stay at the forefront of glaucoma care by engaging in continuous learning and applying the latest advancements in clinical practice.

Person Specification Qualifications, Training & Experience
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Minimum of three years' experience at SHO or higher leve
  • Other qualifications
  • Work experience in busy glaucoma clinics and eye casualty
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Teaching experience
  • Glaucoma subspecialty interest and experience
  • DRCOphth, MRCOphth, FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Research experience
  • Exposure to surgery and surgical complications
  • manage and identify emergencies
Aptitudes and skills
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
  • Willingness to seek timely assistance from senior
