We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Engineer to lead one or more Feature Teams. This is an excellent opportunity for former engineers who have progressed to engineering leadership roles, or experienced technical professionals capable of guiding, reviewing, and constructively challenging the work of high-performing engineering teams. The successful candidate will work hands-on across both on-premises private cloud and public cloud (AWS) environments, engaging in the full development lifecycle. Your Key Responsibilities
- Lead one or more Feature Teams, providing technical guidance and mentorship to engineers.
- Be a change leader, challenge statuesque and motivate teams to embrace new technologies, drive improvements in speed and quality
- Work across the full development lifecycle, from building backend services to deploying and operating applications in production
- Design and develop scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
- Oversee the build and deployment of applications across on-prem OpenShift private cloud and AWS.
- Implement and operate CI/CD pipelines using GitLab and Jenkins.
- Guide teams in containerisation and orchestration, leveraging OpenShift and Kubernetes concepts.
- Champion DevOps best practices across development, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
- Implement and manage service mesh solutions for traffic management, security, and observability.
- Collaborate closely with cloud engineers, DevOps, and platform teams to deliver robust solutions.
- Review and challenge technical designs and implementations, ensuring alignment with architectural standards.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within teams to optimise delivery and system reliability.
Skills and Attributes for Success To qualify for the role, you must have:
- Proven experience as a Lead Engineer, Engineering Manager, or in a technical leadership role.
- Bachelors' or Masters' degree in engineering, or a related field.
- Strong engineering background with a hands-on approach to technical problem-solving with minimum 8+ years' experience.
- Expertise in designing and developing backend services (preferably using Java and Spring Boot).
- Significant experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS and private cloud (OpenShift).
- Solid understanding of DevOps, CI/CD, and modern software delivery pipelines.
- Familiarity with microservices architectures, containerisation, and orchestrated deployments.
- Excellent communication and team leadership skills.
- Ability to review, challenge, and guide technical teams in best practices and innovative solutions.
