Job Description

Wigan Council are seeking a dedicated Fostering Support Worker to join their team, supporting Kinship Foster Carers and prospective Special Guardians to ensure the best possible outcomes for children and young people within family networks.

Key Knowledge Requirements
  • Strong understanding of equality, diversity and community cohesion.
  • Knowledge of childcare legislation, including:
  • Fostering Regulations
  • National Minimum Standards
  • Care Planning Regulations
  • Knowledge of childcare theory and practice.
Role Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality support to Kinship Foster Carers and prospective Special Guardians, helping children remain safely within family and friend networks when they cannot stay with parents.
  • Prioritise safeguarding, stability, and regulatory compliance at all times.
  • Act as a child-focused practitioner, committed to improving experiences and long-term outcomes for children and young people.
  • Work as a team player with strong interpersonal skills, capable of:
  • Engaging carers
  • Building positive relationships with colleagues
  • Using initiative to problem-solve in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrate passion and motivation for supporting vulnerable children to remain within their families wherever possible.
  • Show excellent organisational skills and ability to manage workload effectively.
  • Work within a proactive multi-disciplinary team of social workers, support workers, and other professionals supporting Wigan's children to live in stable family settings.
  • Comply with the National Minimum Standards, relevant regulatory frameworks, and complete all duties within required timeframes.
