This position is designed for candidates who want to build a practical, hands-on technical career. It is not intended for graduates, as we have separate opportunities available for those with degree qualifications. Apprenticeship opportunities may also be available as part of this role for candidates who wish to gain formal qualifications while working.
Job PurposeAs a Fire Testing Technician, you will support research, product development, and technical service projects by carrying out fire performance testing within our Fire & Insulation laboratory. Unlike many laboratory roles, this position is highly practical and physically hands-on, involving manual preparation of test specimens and operation of heavy equipment including forklifts and overhead cranes. Working as part of the R&D team, you will prepare specimens, operate specialist test equipment, and ensure tests are conducted safely, consistently, and in line with established procedures. This role plays an important part in helping AkzoNobel develop and validate world-leading fire protection coatings used across global industries.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare steel test specimens and coatings for fire performance testing
- Set up and conduct furnace fire tests using furnace control software
- Carry out cryogenic testing using liquid nitrogen to perform quench and spill testing of coated steel test pieces
- Record, document, and manage test results in line with laboratory administration processes
- Support new product development and business support projects aligned with R&D strategy
- Operate laboratory equipment including forklift trucks, overhead cranes, and pallet trolleys (training provided where required)
- Work in accordance with laboratory standard operating procedures (LSOPs), risk assessments, and safety requirements
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, safety, and organisation within the laboratory
- Contribute positively to a collaborative team environment and uphold company values
You don't need to meet every requirement - we value attitude, reliability, and a willingness to learn just as much as experience.
- GCSEs in Maths and English (or equivalent)
- NVQ or similar qualification in an engineering or mechanical discipline would be beneficial
- Experience working in an industrial, laboratory, or production environment would be advantageous
- Forklift truck experience is desirable but not essential (training can be provided)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures accurately
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- A disciplined and safety-conscious approach to work
- Comfortable working in a practical, hands-on environment

- Apprenticeship opportunities may be available for candidates interested in gaining formal technical qualifications alongside work experience
