Field Engineer - Rail Grinding Fleet

Location: Milton Keynes / South Midlands Corridor (covering North London, Oxford, Gloucester & surrounding areas)

Salary & Benefits
  • Basic Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 (DOE)
  • On-Target Earnings with on-call and overtime: Up to £77,000+ including overtime, on-call, and allowances
  • Lunch Allowance: £1,175 per year (tax-free)
  • On-Call Payment: £1,175 per year on average
  • Overtime: Paid for all hours above 40/week
    • Flat rate weekdays
    • Double time on Sundays and Bank Holidays (plus a day in lieu for Bank Holidays worked)
  • Travel: Paid door-to-door (excluding local depot visits)
  • Company Van & Fuel Card provided
  • Hotels & Meals: Company accounts with quality hotels, all expenses paid, breakfast and evening meal.

About the Role We're seeking a skilled Field Technical Support Engineer to carry out scheduled and corrective maintenance on advanced rail grinding machines across the South Midlands and North London regions. This is a field-based role combining hands-on technical work with remote fault support - ideal for a proactive engineer who enjoys autonomy, travel, and variety. You'll start your day from home, travelling out to the depot or sites with daily task allocations and fully paid travel. Expect a mix of day and night shifts, the rota will cover some weekends with days off in the week, and 2-3 nights per week away, with all expenses covered.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and repairs on rail grinding equipment
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults
  • Use the computerised maintenance system to manage and close out defects
  • Provide remote or on-site technical support to grinder operators
  • Maintain tooling, consumables, spares, PPE, and vehicle standards
  • Sign off equipment as fit for service after inspection or repair
  • Participate in continuous improvement and reliability initiatives
  • Liaise with internal teams, rail partners, and contractors

Qualifications & Experience Essential:

  • Recognised Mechanical/Electrical/Maintenance qualification (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent)
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Understanding of Health & Safety practices
  • Ability to pass a medical and D&A screening
  • Confident with fault-finding, diagnostics, and the use of IT systems

Desirable:

  • Rail or heavy plant maintenance experience
  • Ex-Military Engineers are always a good fit, REME, RAF Engineers, Marine Engineers, or agricultural engineers.
  • PTS - Personal Track Safety (training provided for non-rail candidates)

Work Pattern

  • 40-hour baseline week (160 hours per 4 weeks)
  • Average 10 hours paid overtime per week
  • Mix of day/night shifts (rotational)
  • Weekend and Bank Holiday cover as part of the rota
  • 1-in-6 on-call (rarely called out; mostly remote phone support)
  • 12-hour fatigue rule (including driving)
