Facilities Officer - Gardens and Grounds

Gardens and Grounds

Canterbury was established in 1987 as an academic school in the grammar school tradition. There is an unrelenting focus in the school on all-roundedness in our students, reflecting that academics, sport, performing arts, service and leadership are core dimensions of a Canterbury education.

We are seeking a proactive and experienced Grounds & Gardens Facilities Officer to join our Property and Works team. This hands-on role is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the presentation, safety, and sustainability of our campus grounds to the highest standard.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintain, and enhance gardens across the campus
  • Design, replant and recreate gardens around the school
  • Plant, prune, and maintain trees, shrubs, and garden beds
  • Mow and maintain lawns and grounds to a high standard
  • Blow and clear pathways and hardstand areas to ensure a safe environment
  • Maintain and service gardening and grounds equipment, including tractors, gators, ride-on mowers, and blowers
  • Monitor, repair, schedule, and maintain irrigation systems to ensure efficient and sustainable water use
  • In collaboration with the Gardens Supervisor, assist in implementing and monitoring the campus-wide weed control program
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of fertiliser programs and provide recommendations to improve garden health and amenity lawns
  • Assist with ad hoc programs and duties as directed by the Director of Property and Works or Gardens Supervisor

Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience in horticulture, landscaping, or grounds maintenance.
  • Experience operating and maintaining gardening equipment and machinery.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining high presentation standards
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Physically fit and capable of working outdoors in varying conditions

Essential Qualifications:

  • Current Positive Working with Children Check (or ability to obtain).
  • Certificate III or IV in Horticulture, Parks and Gardens, or equivalent experience
