Summary

The Governing Body of Altham St. James' C of E Primary School is seeking to appoint an excellent, experienced classroom practitioner with high expectations to work as a teaching assistant in the reception class. The school is a popular village school with a strong family ethos, expected to have 91 pupils on roll in September 2026, and will launch a purpose-built nursery extension to create a unified EYFS unit of up to 30 children.

Assistant teachers will support teaching and learning through play and practical activities, assist with phonics instruction, and contribute to high quality early reading and literacy development. An online search will be carried out as part of our due diligence on shortlisted candidates.

Essential Qualifications

• Recognised Level 2 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Early Years Education and Care, or an equivalent qualification.
• GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).

Desirable Qualifications

• Level 3 Early Years qualification.
• Paediatric First Aid qualification.

Essential Experience

• Experience of working with children in an EYFS or childcare setting.
• Ability to support children's learning through play and practical activities.
• Experience supporting the delivery of high quality phonics teaching and early reading activities, including leading small group interventions to help children make progress in literacy.

Desirable Experience

• Experience supporting children with SEND.
• Knowledge of speech and language development strategies.
