We'd all like amazing work to do, and real work life balance. That's waiting for you at Sainsbury's. Think about the scale it takes for us to feed the nation. The level of data, transactions and variety it involves. Then you'll realise that ours is a modern software engineering environment because it has to be. We've made serious investment into a Tech Academy and into setting standards and principles. We iterate, learn, experiment and push ways of working such as Agile, Scrum and XP. So you can look forward to awesome opportunities in everything from AI to reusable tech.

We can consider both a London or a Manchester base location for this role.

At Sainsbury's we believe that the customer should be at the heart of everything we do. Our vision is to create the easiest, most enjoyable experiences that better serve our customers' ever changing needs. We work across a range of services, products, touch points and tools to deliver distinctive, integrated, and consistent experiences for our customers and colleagues across Sainsbury's Group (which includes Sainsbury's Food, Argos, Nectar, Tu and Habitat). We drive brilliant experiences across all our brands in store and online, operating in agile teams and squads, working seamlessly with teams right across the business to make the most of the exceptional knowledge, insight and talent we have.

The role

Our Sainsbury's grocery website has over millions of users and helps customers get food for every occasion delivered to their door or collected from their local store. It is not just the weekly shops; it's planning food for special occasions, ordering urgent supplies and everything in between. At Sainsbury's, our website aims to help customers plan, order and receive their food however and whenever they want it.

As an Experience Designer, you will be responsible for understanding how our customers shop with us, what their pain points are and what moments of delight could be while they're using our groceries website. You will have access to research and insights and work really closely with our groceries website product and engineering teams. You will take those customer pain points and the business needs and design solutions that make customers' grocery shops through the website as easy and fun as possible.

Working agile, you will be part of our Digital Experience Design Team but will collaborate closely with product and engineering to keep the customer at the centre of everything we do.

You will work within a team of experienced product managers, engineers and stakeholders from across the operation who will rely on your knowledge of user experience, accessibility and interaction design.

What you will do
  • Work with researchers and journey managers to understand customer journeys and pain points
  • Perform desk and in store research to explore and iterate design solutions
  • Organise design workshops with stakeholders to articulate customer and business problems and possible solutions
  • Interact with stakeholders from across the group to share insights and ideas
  • Work with the Design Systems team to understand existing components and contribute ideas to improve the customer experience
  • Work with content strategists and accessibility specialists to ensure the best experience for all customers and colleagues
  • Design and test concepts and solutions
  • Work within agile teams across product, design and engineering to deliver solutions to customers and colleagues
  • Be part of an exciting design community, pairing up with other designers and sharing ideas to iterate the customer experience
