Job Description

Role title: Engineering Manager

Function: Digital Technology & Data

Reports to: Principal Engineering Manager

Number of reports: Circa 20

Work level: WL5

Role Summary

The role of Engineering Manager is to provide pastoral care and develop our engineering talent and help build an inclusive community of high-performing individuals who are deployed into interdisciplinary technology teams. Ensure we have a highly trained and capable workforce via recruitment, training, development and effective career progression. Make sure they are assigned to the right things and well supported in their roles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supporting, coaching and developing up to 20 engineers at all levels of experience, through regular 1:1s, continuous feedback and relationships with team leads
  • Partnering with engineers in your area to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for our engineering practices
  • Attracting and retaining talent, ensuring we have an effective and successful recruitment process and are retaining talent in the organisation
  • Training and development to ensure our engineering colleagues are technically capable of fulfilling their roles and our engineering best practices and standards are applied.
  • Supporting the career progression framework that nurtures and develops our own talent and increases the diversity of our engineering practice
  • Building external reputation of engineering capability at Co-op
Knowledge, Skills, Experience
  • Experience managing the performance and development of 8+ high-performing engineers, including seniors and tech leads.
  • Previously worked as an engineer at a senior level with excellent knowledge of modern software engineering best practices (e.g. agile software development, Extreme Programming (XP), Lean, Kanban, Continuous Delivery, DevOps, Test Driven Development (TDD), pairing/mobbing, clean code, functional programming/OO).
  • Experience with software architecture, design patterns and design principles.
  • Experience coaching, training and mentoring engineering staff. Experience with attraction and recruitment of engineering staff
