Job Title: Engineering Manager - Mechanical (Propulsion)

What you'll be doing
  • Lead the delivery of the propulsion system design for the SSNA programme, ensuring the timely production of key engineering deliverables and technical specifications
  • Ensure all project outputs meet customer requirements and contractual commitments regarding cost, quality, and schedule
  • Embed critical programme objectives - such as cost efficiency, schedule adherence, and system availability - into the propulsion plant design
  • Foster effective collaboration with key stakeholders across BAE Systems, the Ministry of Defence (MoD), and major suppliers
  • Oversee formal reviews and provide approval for engineering outputs to ensure compliance with technical and quality standards
  • Support the development, wellbeing, and performance of the engineering team, while contributing to the long-term capability growth of the propulsion discipline

Collaborate closely with the wider project delivery team and take ownership of managing key equipment sub-contracts to ensure successful delivery

Your skills and experiences
  • A degree (or equivalent qualification / experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with a strong track record off effective team management and delivery in a technical environment

Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across a range of internal and external stakeholders

The Mechanical Propulsion team

We have an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Manager - Mechanical (Propulsion) to join our team in Barrow-in-Furness, with the potential for future hybrid working arrangements. In this pivotal role, you will lead the design and development of the propulsion plant for the Royal Navy's next-generation SSNA submarine, overseeing all major systems and equipment, as well as specifying and supporting the procurement of propulsion components. This is a rare opportunity to influence a major defence programme from its early design stages, while also playing a key role in shaping and developing a high-performing engineering team. We offer relocation support across all Submarine roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria
