Job Description

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a enthusiastic, qualified, experienced, Dispenser with the ability to work well under pressure to join our friendly practice team with 5 partners and 8,400 patients.The post is for 24 hours per week. There is also a requirement to remain flexible to cover colleagues who may be sick or on annual leave.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the preparation and dispensing of prescriptions in accordance with practice policy and extant legislation. In addition, the post holder will be required to support the dispensary team leader in ensuring a high-level of service is delivered at all times whilst supporting the multi-disciplinary team in line with the strategic objectives of the practice to include cost effective procurement when ordering and re-stocking of the dispensary. The post-holder will project a positive and friendly image to patients, carers and other visitors and deal with queries in a professional, courteous and efficient way. Excellent customer service is expected at all times.

Job responsibilities

Dispensing computer-generated acute prescriptions from the clinician.

Highlighting to the clinical any problems arising on either acute or repeat prescriptions, such as reviews, medication being issued that has not been dispensed for some time and whether the patient is due for either a blood pressure or asthma check.

Dispensing and checking acute and repeat prescriptions, safely and accurately.

Ensuring the prescriptions are signed twice daily by the Doctor and sorted into their various destinations.

Dispense private prescriptions, calculate fees and keep appropriate records.

Working within all relevant practice polices and procedural guidelines e.g. Infection control, SOPS, etc.

Ensure any updated/new SOPS are read and signed within a reasonable time.

Participating in training when required.

Supporting the Dispensary Team/Partnership in maintaining dispensary profitability

Building and communicating effective working relationships.

Participating in an annual individual performance review taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and professional development.

Ensuring there is constant control of stock, including ordering of stock via the computer twice daily and entering of goods when received.

Processing, ordering and completion of paperwork for suppliers on a daily basis i.e. Wardles

Dealing with queries or problems from patients, Doctors, Hospitals or nursing homes.

Contacting patients when necessary regarding correspondence and results from the hospital.

Ensuring returned drugs are disposed of safely.

Keeping accurate and up to date records of controlled drugs.

Ensuring the counting and postage of prescriptions to the PPA is completed each month.

Collecting prescription charges in accordance with dispensary protocol

Ensuring controlled drugs are dispensed in accordance with practice policy

Process prescription requests via email, phone, face-to-face, repeat dispensing or online

Ensuring all repeat prescriptions are processed within a 72-hour timeframe

To be responsible for ensuring the completion of a CD stock check every two weeks assisted by the Dispensary Manager/Practice Manager

Safe disposal of returned and/or out of date medicines

Maintaining stock levels within the dispensary, liaising with the Dispensary Team Leader when required

Receiving and storing supplies in accordance with current policy, ensuring the cold chain is maintained where applicable

Completion of fridge/room temperature log on a daily basis

Maintaining a clean and safe working environment at all times

The daily cashing up of monies.

Assisting with dossette box preparation.

Any other duties deemed necessary for the smooth, effective and efficient running of the dispensary

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
  • GCSE Mathematics & English (C or above)
  • NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care
Experience
  • Experience of working with the general public

  • Experience of working in Primary Care
  • Experience of working in a GP Surgery setting
