Job Description

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Director of Hockey to start in April or September 2026.

The Department

Brighton College is firmly established as one of the top sports schools in the country, with world class facilities, the new School of Science and Sport and outstanding teaching and coaching. Pictured are recent national achievements: Tier 1 Hockey Championship semi finalists, Indoor Hockey National runners up, National Rosslyn Park Rugby 7s winners, National Rugby 10s winners, National Netball finalists, National Swimming titles, National Fencing titles, numerous international Athletics vests and Sussex County Cricket Champions.

Role Summary

Hockey is one of the College's largest and most successful sports. The Director of Hockey will lead and develop the girls' hockey programme, coordinating staff, supporting coaches and students and contributing to other core sports programmes.

  • Lead and develop the girls' hockey programme, coordinating the work of staff in charge of individual teams.
  • Support, guide and develop less experienced coaches or academic staff involved in the Games programme.
  • Contribute to the provision and involvement of girls within the Games programme.
  • Ideally support other core sports programmes.
  • Where possible, deliver a small number of academic lessons across the age range.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Proven track record of outstanding teaching and/or hockey coaching, particularly in developing players and bringing out the best in individuals and teams.
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills; skilful motivator of pupils and colleagues.
  • Experience teaching at a post 16 level and/or delivering a strong academic record, including a good degree from an established university.
  • Desirable: experience of coaching at a high competitive level and interest in developing within a school environment.

All teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school's pastoral system as a tutor in one of 16 Houses (six boarding houses and ten day houses) and to the broader co curricular life of the school. Qualified candidates should indicate their interests and enthusiasms as part of their application.

Academic Teaching

Academic teaching is desirable but not essential. The successful candidate may teach a small number of academic lessons across the age range and will receive full support through the established teacher training pathway if desired.
