The Director of Finance will manage a large multidisciplinary team and will be required to manage and lead the finance function in a strategic manner, and implement substantial change programmes, for example, the ongoing programme of Local Government Reform. Innovation and continuous improvement are significant priorities. This is a key role in driving the delivery of public services and capital investment in an expedient, effective and efficient manner.
The Director of Finance will also play a key role in supporting the council members in fulfilling their statutory and representational functions in accordance with the principles of good governance. This includes working effectively with the council members providing policy support, keeping councillors informed and developing proposals for agreement by the members prior to implementation within their area of responsibility. External relationships are important to the effective delivery of services by the local authority and the Director of Finance will play a vital role in networking and engaging with a broad range of stakeholders including representatives of Government Departments, State Agencies, business owners, community and voluntary groups, the general public, etc.

Main Duties of the JobSupport the cost effective, expeditious, efficient and effective delivery of council services and capital investment that optimises the impact for residents and visitors to Kerry.
Leading and managing the finance function in Kerry County Council, including the Local Government Operational Procurement Centre and any other area of responsibility assigned by the Chief Executive.
Preparing, implementing and routinely reviewing Kerry County Council's financial status and strategic and operational objectives.
Engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including council members, in the prudent management of the council's financial resources.
Implementing changes to financial systems as required ensuring that management of accounting requirements are supported by adequate information systems particularly in the context of multi-annual budgeting.

Information about the organisationKerry County Council is the authority responsible for Local Government in County Kerry. The Council headquarters are located at Áras an Chontae, Rathass, Tralee County Kerry and there are five Municipal Districts (Municipal District of Tralee, Municipal District of Killarney, Municipal District of Listowel, Municipal District of Kenmare and Municipal District of Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne). Kerry County Council has 33 elected members and approximately 1500 staff.
Kerry boasts both vibrant urban centres and active rural communities, a highly skilled workforce and is home to global companies across the technology, pharmaceutical, food, financial services and other sectors. Its two largest urban centres of Tralee & Killarney are of significant importance to the county. County Kerry also retains its vital role as a premier international sustainable tourism destination.
An opportunity now exists in Kerry County Council for the position of Director of Finance.
Salary Scale effective from 1st February 2026:
Hours of attendance will be fixed from time to time but will amount to not less than 35 hours gross per week.
The annual leave allowance for the position of Director of Finance is 30 days.
