Position Summary

As a Director in Epidemiology in Oncology, you will provide scientific leadership in the application of epidemiological expertise and methods to answer key challenges identified across all phases of drug development for an asset or disease area to deliver new drugs in the oncology portfolio more efficiently and effectively to patients.

This position functions within the Epidemiology Department, which contributes to the successful development of new drugs. Our staff in Epidemiology provide leadership and expertise to develop and execute the Epidemiology strategy across the entire spectrum of drug development, from early discovery to registration and lifecycle management.

Responsibilities
  • Develop a network to ensure alignment of an epidemiology program with the broader asset/disease strategy and play a key role in developing stakeholder understanding of the impact of epidemiology on the asset/disease strategy.
  • Identify new vendors, tools and data sources to deliver epidemiology solutions for the asset/disease area.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives on the role of Epidemiology at departmental level.
  • Serve as an internal expert who may represent GSK on scientific discussions with internal governance bodies and external regulators/external conferences with support.
  • Be accountable for R&D real world evidence strategy for an asset or disease area.
  • Bring RWE insights to inform asset/disease area strategy and development activities for one asset or disease area.
  • Propose and negotiate content of epidemiologic program and budget with matrix leader.
  • Provide expert epidemiological consultation to asset matrix teams (Clinical Development Team, Safety Review Team, Integrated Evidence Team, Medicine Development Team).
  • Lead more complex epidemiological studies and negotiate new partnerships.
  • Contribute to departmental initiatives driving innovative solutions through evaluation of tools, methodologies or processes.
  • Plan resource allocation to accomplish multiple research projects and meet project and study timelines.
  • Identify innovative, timely and cost effective methods to conduct epidemiologic studies.
  • Negotiate internal funding of projects.
  • Communicate study findings to relevant internal and external audiences effectively.
  • Input into regulatory submission documents and represent the function to regulatory agencies as required.
  • Present the company position on epidemiology issues and findings to regulatory agencies and other external authorities.
  • May contribute to advancing the science through membership of external initiatives (e.g., ICPE, IMI).
Why You? Basic Qualification
  • Doctoral degree (PhD, ScD or DrPH) in epidemiology (preferred) or a relevant discipline (e.g., health services research, health outcomes research, public health, statistics, or pharmaceutical sciences).
  • 5+ years of epidemiology experience in a pharmaceutical company.
Preferred Qualification
  • Demonstrated epidemiological expertise and the ability to influence key internal (matrix leaders) and external (regulators) stakeholders around scientifically robust and strategic approaches to delivering epidemiological science to answer key asset challenges.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Highly proficient written, verbal and listening skills.
  • Experience operating in a matrix environment with independent delivery of increasingly complex epidemiological studies including regulatory requirements.
  • Self motivated with the ability to work independently to develop credibility with colleagues within and outside Epidemiology, as well as interact effectively in multidisciplinary matrix teams to influence decisions.
  • Expertise in complex research techniques, tools, and procedures (e.g., quantitative research methods, multiple study designs).
  • Problem solver; ability to devise solutions to complex, unique situations where epidemiological principles need to be applied.
  • Ability to work well within a global and matrix environment, balance priorities, and handle multiple tasks through good planning, project administration, and organization skills.
  • Ability to relay complex, technical information from real world studies to cross functional teams, stakeholders, and non technical audiences.
  • Excellent understanding of the pharmaceutical industry environment across multiple countries/regions.

Salary and Benefits

The US annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges from $179,025 to $298,375. The salary ranges take into account a number of factors including work location within the US market, the candidate's skills, experience, education level and the market rate for the role. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program which is dependent on the level of the role. Available benefits include health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
