About Us

Historic Churches Scotland (HCS) has safeguarded Scotland's ecclesiastical heritage for nearly 30 years, evolving from the Scottish Redundant Churches Trust (founded 1996). We care for historic churches across Scotland-from Orkney to Lanarkshire-ensuring they remain open to visitors and serve communities through religious, educational, cultural, and artistic activities. We are a secular charity supporting all denominations and faiths, reliant on grants, donations, and legacies. Income generated by individual churches sustains those churches alone. With church estates shrinking and pressures increasing, our role in conserving and creatively regenerating historic churches is more vital than ever.

We are expanding from a single staff member to a team of five, enabling us to care for our properties, support local communities, grow membership, advocate for change, and continue responding creatively to current challenges.

Salary: £40,000-£50,000

Role Purpose

The Director will lead HCS to secure its mission through:

• Strategic leadership and advocacy
• Fundraising and partnership development
• Management of HCS properties, staff, and volunteers
• Oversight of organisational finances and governance

Key Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership - Lead the charity and develop its direction, objectives, and strategic plans
• Other responsibilities as required by the Board of Trustees
