Are you an experienced engineer passionate about improving the safety, reliability and performance of complex fleet assets? Do you thrive on leading major engineering change programmes and influencing stakeholders across a business? If so, this could be your next career move.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a Senior Engineering Change Engineer to play a key role in delivering robust, compliant and cost-effective engineering change and overhaul programmes across our fleet. Working closely with the Principal Fleet Engineer, you'll lead the development and delivery of significant asset improvement initiatives that directly enhance fleet safety, availability, maintainability and performance.

This is a high-impact role where your engineering expertise, commercial awareness and leadership skills will shape the future of our rolling stock assets.

What You'll Be Doing ?
  • Lead the delivery of engineering change and overhaul programmes, ensuring they meet agreed safety, performance, time, quality and cost targets.
  • Develop clear, structured specifications and delivery plans covering the full lifecycle of engineering changes.
  • Scrutinise detailed designs to ensure compliance with industry standards, legislation and asset management principles, while optimising reliability and maintainability.
  • Act as Engineering Lead for procurement and tendering activities, supporting supplier selection and contract negotiations.
  • Proactively identify, assess and manage engineering risks, resolving issues as they arise.
  • Build robust business cases, establishing accurate costs, resources and timelines.
  • Manage engineering budgets associated with Asset Business Plan (ABP) initiatives.
  • Influence and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders across Fleet, Projects, Supply Chain and the wider business.
About You

You're a delivery-focused engineer with strong technical foundations and the confidence to lead complex change in a regulated environment.

You'll bring:

  • Chartered Engineer status (or actively working towards it via a recognised scheme).
  • Strong knowledge of rolling stock maintenance practices and the railway regulatory and standards framework.
  • Experience applying asset management principles to real-world engineering challenges.
  • Excellent planning, organisation and change management skills.
  • Commercial awareness and a pragmatic, results driven mindset.
  • The ability to lead through influence, working effectively with multiple stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong numeracy, literacy and IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access).
  • The ability to apply engineering first principles and interpret technical and railway standards.
Why Join Us?

You'll be part of an organisation that values engineering excellence and genuinely cares about its people. Our culture is built on shared values that guide how we work every day:

  • Collaborative - We succeed by working together as one team.

We want everyone to feel valued, respected and safe, and you'll play an important role in role modelling these behaviours across the teams and partners you work with.

"I'm a Thameslink passenger host and team leader based at Luton station and I'm currently doing a Level 3 Supervisor apprenticeship so that I can improve my skills even further. I was hesitant to do the apprenticeship at first because of my age - I left school over 60 years ago without any qualifications! It's been hard to get back into the routine of learning again."

Tonderai Matizha Johnson
Area Operations Manager

"When I saw that GTR was advertising places for its apprenticeship scheme I looked into it straight away because I thought it was a great opportunity to learn whilst getting real life experience in a 9 5 job. I applied for a level three business administration apprenticeship and was thrilled to find out I had a place on the course! I was so excited that I didn't even mind it was based 250 miles away from where I lived."

"Working for GTR is very rewarding and fulfilling. You really feel like you're making a difference to customers, no matter what role you're in as at the end of the day they're the heart of our business. I've had lots of opportunities to explore other aspects of the business including supporting our station staff and gaining my Train Dispatch Licence which has been enriching for my experience here."

Nathaniel Owen
Station Manager

"I work as part of the Fleet Infrastructure team, which means ensuring our 18 Engineering locations operate safely and efficiently. We oversee all building and track maintenance works as well as various minor and major projects across the network."

"I started in a small ticket office back in 1996 and have continued to work my way up ever since. A previous manager told me about a job he'd seen advertised for a trainer. 'd never considered a job in HR or mentoring before then, but he said I'd be perfect for it and I haven't looked back since!"

Zoey Hudson
Head of Talent, Diversity and Inclusion

"Since April, I've helped to support our Kickstart Scheme. It's been a really rewarding process to be part of because I know first hand how tough it can be to find work once you're out of it."

"I love the freedom that comes with being a train driver. Obviously, there are rules and regulations to follow as well as duties and commitments to carry out, but in a way, you're sort of your own boss, which is nice."
