Posted 2 hours 12 minutes ago by Wallace Myers International
A Tier 1 Contractor with operations across Ireland and the UK is looking for a Design Coordinator to lead design delivery on a major project based in Galway. Sitting at the heart of the Project Delivery Team alongside the Project Manager, Design Manager and Quantity Surveyor, you will own the coordination of design information from consultants and contractors, making sure it is compliant, buildable, within budget and on programme.
This is a role with real autonomy and real influence. You will run the design process day to day, take control of design team meetings and workshops, and mentor Project Document Controllers, with a clear route to develop your career within a long-established, family-run business.
About the ClientFounded in 1952 and still family-run, this contractor has spent more than 65 years setting standards in design and construction. A BSI-verified BIM Level 2 Tier 1 Lead Contractor, they deliver across education, healthcare, commercial, residential and industrial sectors, and their work has been recognised with multiple Contractor of the Year and Project of the Year awards. Quality, integrity and care for their people sit at the centre of how they operate.
Key Responsibilities- Lead design delivery: manage one large project design team to produce information that is fully coordinated, compliant with the Tender Specification, Employer's Requirements, legislation and regulation, within budget, buildable and delivered on programme.
- Set up the project: prepare and issue the core design documents within the first two weeks, updating fortnightly ahead of the Design Review Meeting, including the Design Programme, Design Responsibility Matrix, Planning Condition Tracker, Design Risk & Opportunity Schedule, Building Warranty and Building Control Trackers, Design Fee Schedule and Design Change Tracker.
- Drive the design team: progressively take control of Design Team Meetings and workshops, issuing clear minutes within two days (action, responsibility, close-out period) and holding consultants, in particular the Architect, to programme.
- Protect cost and buildability: keep commercial, contractual, programme and technical awareness front of mind, seeking value and testing alternatives at every design stage.
- Control the drawings: review and check drawings so "For Construction" information is firm, final and reflects what was priced at tender, maintained through a comprehensive Change Control tracker.
- Own document control: ensure consultants and contractors comply with the BIM Manager's document management procedures, and support the Document Controller with BCAR handover to the assigned certifier and O&M Manual compilation.
- Mentor and develop: manage and coach Project Document Controllers, promote continual improvement and support their career progression.
- Engage stakeholders: maintain weekly communication with senior consultants, clients and stakeholders, and assist the Design Manager with the appointment of the design delivery team.
- Eliminate risk: consider construction methodology and Health & Safety in the design itself, resolving issues quickly and decisively.
- Close out cleanly: produce the Design Close Out Schedule two months before design completion, covering outstanding design issues, planning, Building Control and warranty conditions, BREEAM certification, O&M Manual and HUG, as-built drawings, air and acoustic tests, and sign-off of samples and technical submittals.
- Proven experience coordinating design information within a contracting or construction environment, ideally on large-scale projects
- Strong working knowledge of the design process, planning and building control compliance, and document management in a BIM-enabled environment
- Commercially minded, with the ability to ask "is it within budget and is it buildable?" and make sound decisions quickly
- Confident communicator and negotiator, able to manage senior consultants and challenge where needed
- Self-motivated and able to work on your own initiative, with the judgement to know when to elevate to the Design Manager
- Organised, detail-focused and driven, with a natural ability to lead and mentor others
- A key role on a significant project with a well-established Tier 1 Contractor operating across Ireland and the UK
- Genuine autonomy, with increasing ownership of the design process and design team meetings
- Exposure to a BSI-verified BIM Level 2 environment and award-winning project delivery
- Clear performance KPIs and a supportive route to career progression
- A family-run culture built on integrity, care, respect and long-term relationships
