Job Description

The UCL Cancer Institute is the hub for cancer research at University College London, one of the World's leading universities. The Institute draws together over 300 talented scientists who are working together to translate research discoveries into developing better, more effective treatments to improve outcomes for cancer patients. In particular, it fosters links between basic cancer researchers across Biomedicine, and with the clinical activities of our four partner Hospital trusts, known as UCL Partners: University College London Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust, the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust, and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust) as well as the London School of Pharmacy and Cancer Research UK. About the role

The Deputy Laboratory Operations Manager will be responsible for supporting the management of the Cancer Institute's communal laboratory facilties and equipment across the Bloomsbury and Royal Free sites of the Cancer Institute. The role will be instrumental in delivering professionally managed high quality laboratory operations. The post holder will also provide support for a defined portfolio of activity supporting the Insititute Safety Advisor. The post holder, along with the wider team encompassing Safety and Buildings Management staff, will provide high quality resilient services supporting the Institute's research and educational activities. The post holder will work in close collaboration with academic and professional services staff primarily within the Cancer Institute and across UCL as a whole.

About you

Successful candidates must have a Degree in Science, preferably with a higher degree which has incorporated working in a research laboratory and/or a substantial level of experience of working in a research laboratory or equivalent.

Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, to encompass but not limited to being able to:

  • deal professionally and effectively with a wide range of people.
  • prepare clear and concise training materials, protocols and policy documents.
  • adapt approach as necessary in order to resolve difficult and sensitive situations.
  • be able to train users on protocols and techniques.

Knowledge of working with unsealed radioactive sources and / or X Ray equipment and understanding of Procurement procedures are desirable but not essential.
