Job overviewThis is an exciting opportunity to work within the Rheumatology / Metabolic Bone Department. The Deputy Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide evidence-based clinical advice to healthcare professionals, patients and their carers. The post holder will help deliver a patient-focused service through integrated care and contribute to the visions and values of the specialty and the Trust.
The Rheumatology/Metabolic Department operates a medical day suite, outpatient clinics, and a dedicated patient helpline. The team includes 6 Consultants and other medical staff, Clinical Nurse Specialists and clerical staff.
Key attributes you need to demonstrate include:
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to communicate confidently with established organisational skills
- Cannulation skills and intravenous administration of drugs
- Aspiration to continue to learn and develop, particularly around metabolic disease
The post would give the following opportunities -
- Development of expertise in the management of patients with inflammatory arthritis and osteoporosis
- Experience in managing other rheumatological diseases such as hypermobility, chronic pain and rare metabolic bone disease
- Increasing skills in cannulation and IV drug administration, with opportunities to visit other departments and hospitals
Provide specialist advice, education and support to patients and their relatives attending nurse-led rheumatology clinics. This includes counselling patients for new therapies and reviewing patients on existing therapies.
Assess patients' physical, psychological and social needs, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, and recommend the most appropriate course of action.
Help develop and work within protocols for the management of rheumatology conditions including osteoporosis.
For patients on disease-modifying drugs, biologics and bone therapies: use recognised outcome measures, assessment tools and clinical skills to evaluate progress, request appropriate investigations for monitoring, and interpret results.
Care for patients receiving intravenous biologic or bone therapies and cannulate these patients.
Provide high-quality written, verbal and telephone advice.
Liaise with GPs to maintain continuity of care and patient adherence to medications and supplements. Work closely with the multi-disciplinary team and make referrals when necessary.
Coordinate with pathway coordinators to assist with triaging into appropriate nurse-led clinics and manage nurse clinic waiting lists.

Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesJob Purpose
To assess and manage patients with rheumatology conditions including osteoporosis care. To develop and work within agreed protocols. To provide support for patients and medical/nursing colleagues and to support the intravenous medication day suite. Support telephone helplines and generic email accounts.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Rotation between Bolsover Street and Stanmore sites when applicable to the role.
Clinical
Provide specialist advice, education and support to patients and their relatives attending nurse-led rheumatology clinics, including counselling for new therapies and reviewing patients on existing therapies.
Follow up with patients to support adherence to prescribed treatment.
Care for patients receiving intravenous biologic or bone therapies, supporting the Day Unit that administers infusions.
Provide high-quality written, verbal and telephone information for patients and families.
Produce accurate documentation electronically and on paper, in line with policies and procedures.
Liaise with GPs to maintain continuity of care and patient adherence to medications/supplements.
Work closely with the multidisciplinary team and make referrals when necessary.
Management and Leadership
Maintain systems and accurate records to ensure appropriate patient care and the ability to audit outcomes.
Maintain databases for patients on disease-modifying drugs, biologics and bone therapies.
Professional
Work within your competence and the NMC code of conduct; take responsibility for ongoing professional development.
Education, Training and Development
Provide support and specialist advice to colleagues within the Trust and in the community. Attend and contribute to relevant meetings.
Audit
Participate in audit of the specialty to evaluate treatment efficiency. Develop action plans with your Line Manager and share findings with the team.
Person specification Education and Qualifications- NMC Pin Number on Application
- Band 6 experience for at least 2 years
- Practice assessor or equivalent
- Previous Rheumatology experience
- Band 6 experience (2 years +)
- Understanding of clinical nurse work
- Knowledge of bisphosphonates and biologic drugs
- Experience in a medical day unit
- Manage own workload
- Good oral and written communication
- Cannulation
- Ability to lead and conduct MDT meetings
- Cytotoxic drug trained
