Job Description
Departmental Lecturer in Human Geography

The School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE), the Transport Studies Unit (TSU), and St Anne's College are seeking a Departmental Lecturer in Human Geography to provide teaching and research cover during Dr Jennie Middleton's research fellowship and sabbatical. This is an opportunity to contribute to outstanding teaching while developing an active research profile within one of the world's leading centres for geographical research.

The successful candidate will deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in human geography, with particular responsibility for transport and mobilities, including leading the undergraduate Transport and Mobilities option. The role also includes field teaching, qualitative methods teaching, undergraduate tutorials at St Anne's College, dissertation supervision, assessment, admissions, and pastoral support.

Alongside teaching, you will undertake research within the Transport Studies Unit, contributing to its internationally recognised work on urban transport and mobilities. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research addresses the themes of everyday life, care, and/or disability in relation to urban transport and mobility, and whose work complements existing strengths within the TSU. You will develop collaborative research projects, contribute to publications and funding applications, engage with non academic stakeholders, and participate in the Unit's wider research activities.

We are seeking a candidate who will hold a PhD/DPhil by the time of appointment, with expertise in human geography and an active research profile in transport and mobilities or a closely related field. You should have experience of teaching and small group instruction, an emerging publication record, and a commitment to high quality teaching, collaborative research, and an inclusive academic environment.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Professor Tim Schwanen: . All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection process.

This post is available from 4 January 2027 and is offered on a full time, fixed term basis until 30 September 2028.
