Buckinghamshire Priority Dental Service (BPDS) is looking for enthusiastic and conscientious dentists with excellent interpersonal skills and interests in all fields of dentistry.

We are open to considering a full time and/or a part time Dental Officer to join the team, based at Brookside Clinic (you may also work on the dental mobile in High Wycombe or at Amersham Health Centre).

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be required to provide a full range of dental care to any patient accessing the Buckinghamshire Priority Dental service, including priority groups, special needs children and adults, who require care.

You will be joining a team that is responding to change, redesigning services, committed to a patient focused NHS and developing innovative solutions to improved access and oral health. BPDS has a dynamic team that includes specialists, dentists, dental therapists, and dental core trainees.

What we offer

We offer a service for patients who fit the criteria listed below, and because of this are unable to have care provided to them by a general dental practitioner:

  • Adults and children with severe learning disabilities
  • Adults and children with severe physical disabilities
  • Adults and children with complex medical problems
  • Adults and children with severe mental health problems
  • Children with severe behavioural management problems
  • Adults and children with very severe anxiety and dental phobias (this is available in Buckinghamshire only, not Milton Keynes)
Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post will involve providing dental care to children and adults of all ages including those with special needs, physical disabilities and other priority groups. The service provides treatment under inhalation and intravenous sedation and general anaesthetic. Care is also provided in a dental mobile and in the domiciliary setting. The postholder will have the opportunity to be involved in treating patients under sedation or general anaesthesia, treatment using the wheelchair tipper and bariatric bench and providing epidemiology fieldwork. Opportunities may be available to be involved in the training of junior staff such as a dental core trainee.

  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)
  • Full registration with the GDC

Experience
  • Current or recent experience working as a dentist with clinical commitment in hospital, salaried or general dental service
  • Ability to diagnose, manage and treat urgent dental problems for both children and adults
  • Clerical experience of using dental software packages
  • Previous experience in working for urgent care dental services
  • Understanding of telephone triage
  • Previous experience in carrying out remote telephone and video consultations
  • Able to supervise trainees and unqualified staff
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care under general anaesthesia
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care under inhalation sedation
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care on a domiciliary basis
  • Experience of treating patients with additional needs
Knowledge
  • Demonstrable knowledge of cross infection control standards
