Deciphering the Molecular Mechanisms Underlying the Pathogenicity of mtDNA Mutations
Posted 1 hour 3 minutes ago by Nuclearinst
Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in Professor Hansong Ma's laboratory within the School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham.
This project forms an integral part of the recently established MRC Centre of Research Excellence in Mitochondrial Genome Therapeutics (MRC CoRE-MitoGT). CoRE-MitoGT is an international consortium that aims to understand how mtDNA mutations cause disease and develop therapies targeting their root causes. The student will join the Ma lab, one of the core laboratories within CoRE-MitoGT, based at the University of Birmingham, to investigate factors that regulate the abundance of pathogenic mtDNA mutations. In parallel, the project aims to identify nuclear-encoded regulators that could mitigate detrimental effects of mitochondrial mutations.
The project will combine genetic, cell biological, and molecular approaches using both Drosophila and human cell models to uncover the fundamental principles that regulate mtDNA quality.
This studentship provides:- Tuition fees at the UK home student rate.
- A tax-free maintenance stipend for four years at the current UKRI rate.
Applications from international students are welcome. Please note that the studentship covers tuition fees at the UK home rate only; international applicants will be responsible for paying the difference between the home and international tuition fees.
The studentship is expected to commence in 2027.
Training and environmentAs part of the CoRE-MitoGT, the student will join a large and interactive mitochondrial research community with access to state-of-the-art imaging, proteomics and sequencing facilities and an active postgraduate environment. The student can expect to receive technical training in a range of methodologies such as advanced Drosophila genetics, in vivo genetic screening, mitochondrial bioenergetics and biochemistry, molecular biology, mtDNA genotyping by ddPCR and sequencing. This combination will provide the experimental design, quantitative analysis and multidisciplinary skills required for an independent researcher. In addition, CoRE-MitoGT will provide an extensive programme of personal and professional training, including ECR-focused events and development opportunities, as well as promoting best practice to enhance EDI and positive research culture.
