Database Administrator

Overview

A Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the performance, integrity, and security of an organization's database systems. The DBA ensures that data remains consistent, is clearly defined, and is accessible according to organizational requirements. This role is essential for maintaining the health and efficiency of data-driven applications and Services.

Key Responsibilities

Install, configure, and upgrade database server software and related products.

Monitor database performance and implement changes to improve efficiency.

Ensure database security, including user access management and data encryption.

Design and implement backup and recovery strategies to prevent data loss.

Develop and maintain documentation related to database architecture, processes, and policies.

Troubleshoot and resolve database issues, working closely with development and IT teams.

Plan for capacity and scalability as organizational needs grow.

Ensure compliance with data governance and privacy regulations.

Automate routine database tasks and maintenance procedures where possible.

Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

Proven experience in database administration, management, and support.

Strong knowledge of database technologies (eg, SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL).

Proficiency in database Scripting and automation (eg, SQL, PowerShell, Bash).

Understanding of data security best practices and compliance requirements (eg, GDPR).

Analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Desirable Skills

Experience with cloud-based database solutions (eg, Azure SQL, AWS RDS).

Knowledge of database replication, clustering, and high availability solutions.

Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines related to database development.

Certification in relevant database technologies (eg, Microsoft, Oracle, AWS).

Working Conditions

The DBA role may require occasional out-of-hours work to perform maintenance, upgrades, or troubleshooting.

Participation in an on-call rota may be expected to ensure 24/7 database availability for critical systems.

Career Progression

With experience, a DBA can progress to senior or lead DBA roles, database architect positions, or move into related fields such as data engineering, cloud solutions architecture, or IT management.
