Job Description

Do you want to work in a dynamic and progressive arts organisation?

The Ulster Orchestra, along with their partners Colin Neighbourhood Partnership, Shankill Children's Zone and Queen's University Innovation Zones, are seeking an experienced and qualified music facilitator to be part of a new element of our flagship Crescendo Project. The partners' vision is to improve outcomes for children through music.

The project aims to increase the resilience, aspirations and emotional development of children from areas of social and economic disadvantage through a programme of music skills development, to increase participants' musical skills while contributing to their improved wellbeing and self-worth.

Situated in four schools in north and west Belfast, the current project aims to deliver weekly workshops with P1-P3 classes to develop fundamental music skills and progress to learning orchestral instruments from P4-P7.

The Department for Communities has now confirmed support for a pilot project to deliver Crescendo activity with 4 new schools in the Colin and Shankill areas.

We are recruiting facilitators to deliver this activity for 10 weeks in the period January-March 2026. Facilitators are required to deliver musicianship workshops with classes of P3 pupils:

  • Facilitators will develop their own delivery plan in conjunction with the Ulster Orchestra's Animateur

There will be a range of hours available. Attendance may be required at preparation/evaluation sessions and these will be paid in addition to delivery outlined above.

Reporting To: Head of Community Engagement and Grants, Learning and Community Engagement Programme Manager, UO Animateur (as relevant)

PERSON SPECIFICATION
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in music, music performance and/ or music teaching or equivalent work experience in individual or group tutoring
  • Demonstrable flexibility of approach to learning, and an ability to motivate learners of varying abilities
  • Flexibility in terms of working hours
  • Demonstrable passion for teaching music and ability to adapt to each pupil's needs
  • Ability and experience of working with individual and/or small groups of early years pupils
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work as part of a wider team
  • Experience of working alongside teachers/other professionals
  • Experience of leading or co-leading workshops or lessons in a group music tuition context
  • Experience of lesson planning and evaluation
  • Awareness of the primary school curriculum in Northern Ireland including social and emotional learning
  • Experience of working with children with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

General:
  • Availability to deliver workshops on a weekly basis within the school term from 5 January-31 March 2026
  • Facilitators will be subject to the relevant Access NI police check procedures and must adhere to the Orchestra's Safeguarding, Health and Safety and other relevant policies in all aspects of their work.
