Job Description

The University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex) is looking to fill two consultant posts in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

The closing date is 05 February 2026.

UHSussex consists of four hospital sites: the acute tertiary centre in Brighton, and the district general hospitals at Chichester, Worthing and Haywards Heath. The Infectious Diseases Unit is based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and is a Specialist Regional Infectious Diseases Centre. Microbiology services are supported by laboratories at St Richards Hospital, Chichester and at Brighton. UHSussex has close links to the Academic Department of Global Health and Infection at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and the University of Sussex and University of Brighton.

These posts are designed to enhance collaborative working across the trust, maximising the reach and expertise of our infection specialists across the region. The 10 PA job plan offers 50% of time in Clinical Microbiology (serving Worthing or Chichester) and 50% covering Infectious Diseases in Brighton.

Main duties of the job

Each consultant will undertake a one month rotation at each site. The role includes:

  • Clinical Microbiology at St Richard's Hospital or Worthing Hospital - providing infection consultations for complex in patients, daily ward rounds, liaison with hospital staff and GPs, participation in multidisciplinary meetings, ITU/HDU rounds, and protocol development.
  • Infectious Diseases at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton - ongoing inpatient and outpatient care, Saturday/weekday ward cover, supervision and development of the Rapid Access Infectious Diseases clinic, antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Cross site duties - contributing to integrated trust wide infection service, developing clinical pathways, and ensuring equitable access to specialist infection input.

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Clinical Microbiology - infection consults, microbiology ward rounds, clinical liaison, multidisciplinary participation, ITU/HDU rounds, and laboratory protocol work.
  • Infectious Diseases - inpatient care of infection patients, management of outlying ward areas, RAID clinic supervision and development, antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Generic roles - teaching specialist trainees and foundation doctors, teaching medical students, attending cross site consultant governance meetings, clinical and educational supervision, yearly appraisals, CPD, and research participation.

On call duties: Microbiology on call (Worthing and SRH) during the microbiology rotation, and Infectious Diseases/Endocrine ward cover during the ID rotation.

Person Specification
  • Appropriate progression of career to date.
Experience / Qualifications
  • OFRCPath and MRCP or recognised equivalent.
  • Full specialist registration (or eligibility within six months of interview) with the GMC.
  • UK training: Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Infectious Diseases & Microbiology or within six months of receiving it.
  • Non UK training: Evidence of equivalent qualifications confirmed by GMC.
  • Higher degree.
  • Qualification in medical education (Masters, Diploma/Certificate).
  • Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene.
  • ALS certification.
Clinical Skills and Experience
  • Confidence in managing general medical comorbidities in infection patients.
  • Understanding of clinical risk management.
  • Postgraduate experience working in ICU or HDU.
Knowledge
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge, up to date.
  • Knowledge and use of evidence based practice.
  • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.
Organisation and Planning
  • Experience and ability to work in multi professional teams.
  • Understanding of NHS, clinical governance and resource constraints.
  • Evidence of managerial skills: achievements and courses attended.
Teaching Skills
  • Evidence of interest and commitment to teaching.
  • Recognised teaching qualification.
Academic and Research
  • Evidence of participation in audit, research experience, publications, prizes and honours.
Personal Attributes
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
