Consultant Radiologist

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust are looking for skilled and motivated Consultant Radiologists to join the Radiology Department.

The Department of Radiology is a large, busy department hosted across two main acute sites with services at multiple peripheral sites in the community. It features a full range of modern, recently acquired imaging equipment, including 5 static CT scanners and 3 static MRI scanners across both acute sites. A new large purpose built Diagnostic Imaging Centre at South Tyneside will house 2 CT scanners, 2 MRI scanners and a PET CT scanner. The department also offers an IR suite at Sunderland Royal Hospital with additional interventional rooms at South Tyneside.

Applications are encouraged and welcomed from doctors who have, or are expected to receive, a CCST in Radiology. We welcome applications from General Radiologists and those with specialist interests, and the post holder will be supported to develop and consolidate any areas of particular interest.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will hold continuous responsibility for any patient under their care, ensuring high quality, safe patient care and experience.

The post holder is expected to work within multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with national imaging and reporting quality and performance metrics, to diagnose and treat patients efficiently.

The post holder will attend and contribute to the monthly Directorate/Clinical Governance meetings and the monthly REALM meeting, ensuring effective clinical governance across the Directorate.

Consultants undertaking clinical activities must participate in high quality clinical audit and support their clinical teams in carrying out local, regional and national audit activity.

In conjunction with the Clinical Director, the Directorate Manager and other Consultants, the post holder will coordinate and supervise the provision of a high quality service.

The post holder will be expected to work at weekends and bank holidays on a pro rated basis, contributing to the on call rota.

Job responsibilities

  • A Hospital Consultant has continuous responsibility for any patient under their care.
  • Final job plans will be agreed in discussion between the successful candidate and the Clinical Director and will be subject to annual review.
  • Some sessions, in particular audit and teaching sessions, will be worked flexibly, with the opportunity to revise the fixed procedural sessional timetable to accommodate other commitments.
  • The post holder is expected to attend monthly Directorate meetings, Clinical Governance meetings and REALM.
  • The post holder will develop the service in keeping with national guidance and the Local Modernisation and Reform Group priorities/targets.
  • Consultant performance is monitored within the Directorate, with strong emphasis on personal career development.
Person Specification Teaching and Education
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
  • Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Ability to teach clinical, technical, practical skills.
  • Qualification in medical education.
Clinical Experience
  • Experience of working within a dynamic Radiology department.
  • Experience of practising in the speciality in the NHS.

Qualifications
  • Primary medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC.
  • A post graduate qualification such as MRCP, FRCPath, MD.
Management and Administrative Experience
  • Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance processes and effective utilisation of resources.
  • Evidence of organisational, management and time management skills.
  • Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding departmental goals.
  • Leadership course and/or certificate.
Audit and Research
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice.
  • Involvement in quality improvement measures.
  • Ability to undertake multi disciplinary audit / audit in speciality area.
  • Experience of clinical research.
  • Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals.
